The shell is used when using the tripod attachment. But if you have a long enough USB-C cord, you could put adhesive velcro on the back of the mount and more on where you want to put it and you have yourself a not very good thermal security camera. It's not meant to be used this way. It only works and records when it's connected to a phone and video is initiated.
