I assumed it was to help hold everything together. I've left mine on and not had any trouble in using it. **Q: how many loops does this 10 in whisk have?** A: I actually took the whisk out of the drawer and counted 18 loops in groups of 6. Hopes this helps as it is very sturdy. **Q: Is this whisk magnetic?
