I have had Garmin for years. When my beloved watch finally croaked I was hard pressed to pick which model to move on to. The single most important thing for me was the topographical maps. I hike/trail run everyday and the only reason I would consider paying so much for a watch would be those maps (I am also a total idiot and have a tendency to go too far or take an unexpected detour and more times than I care to say having the map and my track on my wrist has saved my bacon...big time). I absolutely love the detail, too. At the time, the Garmin watches were the only ones that had actual USGS maps on the watch. You don't have to pay extra (which would have pissed me off given how expensive these watches are). You do have to may extra for some hiking map, but I don't know what it is or why you would need it. I managed to accidentally get the maps to show the 3D terrain, but I haven't been able to figure out how I did it, yet. But, it is really nice to see the hills and dales and be able to get a real idea of which "I just think I'll take a short cut through here..." are just dumb ideas and which are huge mistakes that won't work. Don't get me wrong, just because I know there's a river there doesn't mean I won't try it. Gotta have some adventures in life. The second most important thing was the small size. Although I am a tall woman, I have small wrists and boy sized watches look so weird and are very uncomfortable. This is just about right, with the face being about as wide as my wrist. I am fair, so I really like the gold and beige and I have a variety of bands to swap out. A big debate and test I had was between getting the AMOLED screen with the Epix or the solar charging with the Fenix. I really wanted the solar, but unfortunately, for the s versions of the Fenix, the solar actual drained the battery, never charged it. On the other hand, the AMOLED screen made such a huge huge difference in using the maps. They became much easier to see and discern. From what I understand, the larger Fenix solars would charge. If that were the case with the smaller, it might be a tough choice. But, because it isn't, I choose the AMOLED and the Epix. I can't think of a downside. In comparing them side by side, the Epix battery out performed the Fenix 7s solar. Sold!
