10780 Diamond Shape Log Splitter

I was looking for a wedge to help me split firewood, specifically pieces that my heavy axe would not split. This was the cheapest on Amazon, but also looked like it was well suited to the task. I have now been using it for four days and it is working very well with no problems. It is conical with a sharp tip. The tip easily "sticks" into the wood and holds its position. It is then simple to hit it with a sledge hammer. Depending on the thickness/toughness of the wood, it may split after one or a few blows or it may take many with the entire wedge being gradually forced into the wood before it splits apart. My axe blade has a blade on one side and a sledge on the other so is perfect. You will need a good sledge hammer or similar. Looks like it is well made and study and should give long service. There does not seem to be anything to go wrong.

Very good value for money and is very effective in splitting even hard knotty wood but much easier with soft seasoned woods . It is made from strong steel and very heavy , I use a small lump hammer for soft wood and a heavier sledge hammer for hard wood . I have only just started using it but up to now think it is doing my job of log splitting OK . Wearing gloves and safety goggles are a must !

The diamond-shaped wedge design really works — it kicks in and splits the log in multiple directions, so I need fewer hits. Thanks to this wedge, logs that used to be a bit of a chore now “split so easy” — much less frustration. What to keep in mind: You’ll still get a good-arm workout. I found my arms were pretty sore the next day because I ended up doing more logs than planned. It works best when you’re dealing with logs of moderate size and hardwood that’s reasonably dry — if you’ve got massive or very knotty logs, progress is slower. Final verdict: If you have a wood-burner or just cut firewood at home and want something that really improves how quickly the logs split — this tool is a smart buy. It makes the job easier, though you’re still doing the work. For what it does, the value is excellent. Highly recommended.

Really useful does exactly what I needed

If you are using this wedge to split ash, then this wedge will go straight through it. Lots of demonstrators on YouTube use ash. Some also show pictures of the wedge going into the middle of a large log. According to all the experts on YouTube that will never work. So, either the wood is soft to split or the photos are not 100% accurate! If you are using this wedge to split a hardwood - oak etc, then get somebody else to do it while you are out of town. Or better still while on YouTube have a look at butteworks. Honestly, I do not write many reviews, if I do, I try to make them as accurate as possible. If the wood has a crack in it and you can get the wedge into the crack, you may be successful. Otherwise you are going to have a frustrating, back breaking, exhausting experience. And no! Two wedges do not make any difference. If the wood is hard you will fail and you will be completely wiped out! OK! I have been using this wedge for about a week. All of the above still stands but to be fair to the seller/supplier I have made some progress. None of these suggestions are my own, I have gleaned them all from YouTube! If you cannot find a crack in the log, make one, either by using a drill to drill a few holes in line or running an electric saw over the end of the log. Then , liberally spray WD40 all over the wedge (reduces the friction of the wedge going through the wood). Use a club hammer to get the wedge into the first hole, then use a sledgehammer to split the log. Watch out for the wedge to spin out into your legs or your tootsies! Having reduced the log to a more manageable size, I then split it with an electric saw. I use a workmate not a saw horse as the former clamps the log & stops it spinning off. But it is hard work! I am 74 & I am absolutely wasted after an hour of doing this. Good luck to all who try it.

Excellent piece of kit. You'll need a sturdy club hammer as well, (purchased this separately)..Used to split log sections into smaller pieces for my outside wood burner.

Decir en primer lugar que el paquete se extravió ,figurando como entregado ,sin yo haberlo recibido. Hecha la reclamacion en Amazon , fui atendido con rapidez y amabilidad , y a los pocos dias el vendedor envió otra cuña identica sin coste alguno. La empleo para abrir verticalmente ,troncos nudosos , de 30 cm. de diametro y 35 cm. de largo, ...que no consigo abrir con el acha -cuña que tengo. Funciona eficientemente ,tras unos golpes de porra ,abriéndo el tronco sin quedarse atascado .El material se ve de buena calidad .
