How to adjust the needle distance?

The Pressure Adjusting Nut of Pressing Foot has a small spring-loaded screw on the right side for adjustment.

I am sewing leather and my top thread just lays flat on the leather and the bobbin thread comes above the top of the leather and forms loops. Ideas?
