Superb book
This book was recommended to me twenty years ago by a friend. I loved it then, and love it now. It really captures the spirit of St Francis, as written in the words of his long-suffering companion Brother Leo.

A surprisingly earthly portrait of a familiar saintly figure
Knowing little about Kazantzakis, I bought this book expecting a standard saint's life. Instead, I found myself reading the story of a man who comes across as more than a little crazy and certainly not transcendentally saintly. The narrative is firmly rooted in earthly things and even Francis's visions have a physicality about them which renders them far from mystical. This lack of overt spirituality, however, is not detrimental to the novel, for indeed it is intended to be a novel, not a book of religious instruction or inspiration. Perhaps it's greatest strength is the soothing cyclical nature of the story. One journey follows another, illness often strikes with similar symptoms, hunger alternates with the occasional discovery of a scrap of bread, just as the seasons punctuate the tale with their harsh extremities of heat and biting cold. The more one reads, the more familiar the pattern becomes and out of the human suffering described there arises something which transcends it - a kind of certainty that the pattern will repeat itself and a familiarity which is gently comforting.

I think he thinks he's st. Paul
So! what we have here is a mad St Francis! He was one hilarious 'go for it' monk, traipsing around with Bro Leo who is more like his lap dog! Going around dancing in the village squares, getting stoned for it (rocks) and beaten up by brigands for declaring: 'The New Madness'. Living in caves, and insisting on walking barefoot! Quite mad

Yo. Nikos. What up? Nice. St. Francis may be the coolest dude to ever wear the cap and gound. Any one who can chill with birds and squirrels is mad cool in my book. As a youngin taught about Saints, he might have been the coolest because he was so tired of people talking that he talked to animals. I hear that. That's the kind of story that speaks to me. Shut the eff up yall. So Nikos. When you tell a story, don't forget that people sometimes are reading your work. Good start. Then you just went on an internal journey of boringness, and I couldn't follow you bro. For your next book, ya gotta re-think your approach. We want more taking to animals. Talking animals = good No talking animals = WTF Who wants to read a book about St. Francis without animal communication. If I wanna watch people communicate, I can see that at home. I can get human communication at home. I don't read books about things that I can get at home. Take me away Nikos. Take me away. I challenge you to rewrite this book. Scene One: A bird lands on St. Francis' shoulder. I picked your book up for mad animals. It may be in the book, but I couldn't make it through your over worded boringness with people talking. If you need suggestions, don't be afraid to contact me. I'm just trying to make the world a better place. As I think you were with this book. And that's cool dude. We can work this out. Call me.

For those on a spiritual path trying to get closer to God, the story of St Francis' enlightenment, as told by his loyal vagabond friend Leo, will move you deeply. Kazantzakis will make you both laugh & cry your heart out. That's what writers of world-class literature do: They elicit strong emotions. Sometimes the reader is changed for life after such an intense psychological experience. This story of how St Francis became St Francis can do just that. Hey: I'm not even Catholic! Kazantzakis is a writer for soul-searchers, whatever their ethnic or religious backgrounds. That's why he translates into English so well. Plus, Kazantzakis knows how to write gripping plots. This bk was a real page-turner for me & kept me Great company when I was ill.

The font is so small that for an 80 year old man it is unreadable. Can you give me the same book with a larger font. Higher cost is not an issue.
