TV movie adaptation of Jack London's classic gold prospecting novel. Buck the dog has not had an easy life; stolen from his original kindly owners in California, he is mistreated and beaten before being sold to French Canadian guide Perrault (Luc Morrissette). Taken to Yukon, Buck finds a place in Perrault's dog team, delivering messages to Dawson City. It is there that Buck is taken under the wing of John Thornton (Rutger Hauer) and his niece, Helen, who are off to search for gold in the Klondike. They are joined by widowed saloon owner, Maggie (Lynne Adams), and her son, Josh, and together set off to seek their fortunes. Review: Little gem of a movie with Rutger Hauer. - This is yet another underrated little gem starring my fave actor the late Rutger Hauer. Rutger is John Thornton, a kindly man living in long-ago America. A tale of survival it is based on the novel by Jack London. The dogs are beautiful especially the dog that plays Buck. Some scenes of cruelty though which had me quite upset but it really is a great little movie. Rutger really was a great actor and his loss is devastating for all his fans. Review: Call of the wild - Call of the wild is a wonderful story sad in a few places and funny in other places . I love animals and recommend others to watch DVD or read the book .

classic film
This film is an absolute classic of a fabulous book. Although both quite old to younger generations both should be read and watched to see how both medium can make a classic. The book is one for every generation to return to. I first read this forty years ago and have watched the film over again. Fantastic.

An excellent film to watch and it was incredibly close to the book.
This was an excellent film to watch and it was incredibly close to the book. The ending was slightly different though which for me was a little off putting having just recently read the book itself. Although I completely understand the angle that the movie took on the ending. They did well with the dogs in this film, and I just loved Buck (I want a dog like him)... and luckily they did tone down some of the violence from the book as that would have been incredibly difficult to watch!

a moving story
A person who loves animals in general, and dogs in particular will be intrigued by the insight the authour of the book has shown when writing the story from the perspective of the animal. Moreover, the cast of this particular version of film attempted to portray the story quite well. It was presented in a very sensitive manner respecting the animals used in the film. The only disappointing issue is that a film, in general, by virtue of the project, cannot give all the details that have been included in the original book.

I have yet to watch the film but expect it to be a winner. I have also purchased Harrison Ford's version so I can compare.

Charming.
Charming film with the much missed Rutger Hauer as one of its main human characters. An afternoon film for all ages.

This DVD is the video version of Jack London's classic that follows the book most closely. That makes it the best of the lot. London's genius was to cast the dog, Buck, into the archetypal role of the hero. For those interested in pushing their own growth, tiptoeing into the interconnected worlds of archetypes, psychology, mythology, and philosophy, this version of "The Call of the Wild" is a valuable resource. As such it's the perfect part 1 to get one or more humans ready to delve into "Field of Dreams."

The movie is great, but the DVD started skipping and stalling after about 4 showings. I don't know if the DVD is faulty or the player, which is an older computer. This is a GREAT companion movie for any reading class that has read the book," The Call of the Wild." It is very true to the story and really created the mood and message that I believe was the true intent of the author,Jack London. He would have been proud of this movie!!!

A great classic, but not nearly as good as the book. We purchased it because my son read the book for school, and we thought it would be nice to watch the movie. The story line is pretty similar to the book, but the book is so good that I recommend reading it before seeing the movie.

Despite a rough start with uncoordinated sound and video, this is a marvelous film that is true to Jack London's story. You will have to use scene selections to start the film with Buck on the train for Seattle, but after that you have a terrific teaching tool that will delight your students. Please don't show students any other version of this story if you use film to aid understanding. The only problem my struggling readers had with this version was "there's no caveman!"
