Genuine Hudson Reed/Ultra/Crosswater replacement Thermostatic Cartridge - SC50T20

Exactly what we needed and arrived in a flash! Very reasonably priced too. Plumber fixed our shower in 20 minutes. Delighted.

Power Shower started to give problems - pump stopped midshower, pump becoming noisier, water flow from shower lessening. Changed pump, but problems remained. Next thing, shower would only put out cold water, even if the pump was turned off and flow running with gravity only. Had great difficulty removing the thermostatic cartridge - first the 50mm retaining ring had seized, and needed liberal application of WD40 and brute force to remove. A pair of mole grips did the job, just. Secondly, the press-fit cartridge refused to come out of its hole. Again, brute force was needed to drag it out. Inside was coated with limescale, which I polished out with a Scotchbrite pad. The new cartridge fitted perfectly. After re-assembly, shower flow doubled, pump noise halved and all good.

My shower had been losing pressure for a long time and, typical of builders everywhere, the thermostatic mixer was not fitted with water isolation valves and access to the mounting screws was blocked by over enthusiatic tiling and plasterboard. This meant either a very involved, destructive job to change the whole mixer, or opting to try this replacement cartridge. The hardest parts of this were: 1) Remembering to turn off the stop cock and drain the pipes (see above lack of isolation valves) 2) Getting the retaining nut off the existing cartridge - this was a ~55mm diameter nut that clearly required a specialist tool that I didn't have, didn't know the name of and didn't want to buy as I am sure it wouldn't come cheap. It was made even more difficult by poor access. I finally managed with a pair of water pump pliers (joint pliers) and a lot of patience. 3) Removing the old thermostat just involved pulling it forward - though this required a reasonable amount of force, so fortunately the mixer housing was well-secured to the wall! Once it started moving, I had to compensate quickly to stop my elbow smacking into the glass shower wall behind me - it comes out with a pop! After that it was plain sailing. As other reviewers have said, the o-rings on the new cartridge were a lot thinner than the originals, so I swapped them over, cleaned and re-greased them, slid the new cartridge in and put everything back together. The shower works a treat - I needed to adjust the temperature setting a little on the new cartridge, but now it's never been better. Fingers crossed it lasts!

Cheap and quick delivery

Took a chance on this cartridge. Thought the price was too good to be true - other retailers sell the same cartridge upwards of £90. Works perfectly and fixed the problem. Shower wasn’t getting hot enough. Managed to change it myself without calling out a plumber. Happy days!
