Our shower works again!
Suddenly, our shower started acting weird. We were getting scalded then frozen, then scalded then frozen while trying to take a shower. It was really bad. First I replaced the cartridge, but that didn’t work. Then I realized it was this inner pressure balance unit that had gone bad. Took me a little bit to figure out which part to order. You remove the cartridge and see a gray plate that is held in place by a brass ring. Take off the brass ring and pull this unit out. There apparently are several models that are similar but not exactly the same. I’m including a picture of the gray water channel plate that is the interface between this and the cartridge, and a picture of the cartridge itself (with the red ring). The cartridge is NOT included, but I’m showing it to help you determine compatibility. It might help you determine if this is the right part for you. Easy to install and once in place, we had control of the temperature in our shower once again. Very happy. Worked as promised. Direct replacement.

Faucet function restored good as new
13 year old faucet. Semi-functioning for perhaps past 5-6 years; low grade dissatisfaction. Was agonizing about build quality, thinking that remedy was higher grade new faucet, an expensive undertaking. Studying the other amazon reviews, glad to find I'm not the only one fearing bathroom remodeling, ripping out drywall, finding/buying entirely new faucet. Phoned AmStd customer service line; excellent responsiveness walking me through replacement of diverter valve, balancer, and cartridge and part numbers. I indeed did everything myself with all parts from amazon at excellent prices. Did not waste time chasing around locally hit or miss games; content to wait on delivery however much longer it takes than searching at stores during their business hours. Outcome: faucet works just as new. Resolved to replace all parts after 5 years whether they need or not. Significant relief that all thoughts of professional intervention be banished.

Really just need to replace the o-rings, but this part is a perfect match and fixed the leak.
It is exactly the right part, and it stopped the leak. I replaced the ceramic shutoff valve - that wasn't at all the problem, even though the washers were severely compressed. As I suspected, the problem is simply the 2 o-rings at the back. The green 1-way valves at the back detached from the unit and were stuck in their openings. I wish I would have experimented more with removing them to simply replace the o-rings, but I wasn't willing to risk it. Now that I know, I can recommend gently removing the two green valves and replacing the rings. For my, it was only the hot-water side that was the problem. Regardless, this is the genuine item. Leak stopped.

For those with older (20+ years) American Standard shower faucet
We have three baths, all with AS one handle faucets. All leaked at some point. The issue we had was finding the correct unit, because of ours being over 20 years old. These older units have a larger round disk (see the gray disk) than this part, and after a lot of research I couldn't find a replacement. We needed it because after installing a new ceramic cartridge, the downstairs shower continued to leak. I'm not sure why this balancing unit caused the issue, I only know that the lower faucet stopped leaking after I replaced both the ceramic cartridge, and Pressure Balancing Unit. Luckily, I had read a review on Amazon where someone swapped the older style larger round gray disk onto the new unit (there are two small screws and nuts holding it on). I carefully marked the top of the barrel of the new pressure unit so to match the round hole on the gray disk which is oriented up. I used a liberal amount of silicone grease on all of the o-rings, and crossed my fingers. It worked. By the way AS Customer Service was polite but pretty much useless in assisting me. One more thing. I was frustrated that I couldn’t figure it out and had a plumber come in to help. I advised him of the symptoms which left him confused. The faucet typically leaked when the washer or another shower was running. He checked the water pressure into the house and it was way too high. It seems our water pressure controller was failing too. After the controller was replaced the faucet still leaked, which is when I performed the disk swap on the new pressure unit. I wanted to share this incase someone else runs into this issue.

Fix for full hot, full cold, no mix, banging noise
An exact fit for my American Standard. When I removed the old valve, the green seals you see in the pic remained in the valve. I simply removed them with needle nose pliers. Just stating that so you can double check. Also, be sure to lube up those seals and be aware if the new valve doesn't seat by pushing it in, simple install the three flat head screws (attached pic) then carefully begin to tighten them evenly. It should pull the valve in place. just keep an eye on the black seal to ensure it doesn't get pinched. Fixed my water temperature problem and banging noise. Took me longer to get the handle off then it did to change the part

Excellent service. I received it a day earlier than expected and it was a blessing as I couldn't use the shower. The water was scorching hot. I purchased this part along with the cartridge, better to replace both at once to avoid having to open up everything again....and my shower is now in full operation! Never been so happy! Very Important - The old part was extremely hard to get out and I saw a lot of posting about this. Here's what I did: - Use a paint can opener tool and slowly try to pull out using the grooves around this part. This part is plastic so you have to be very carefully to break it out. - Throughout the process of trying to pull it out, I was spraying oil (WD-40 kind) and trying to spray it in. Waited a minute or two and began pulling out again. - You need to be very patient. The trick is to pull out from all around. It's not just about applying full force as you can break it and then you're really stuck. - Once you get it out, check to see that the rubber rings are not stuck on the inside. If so, take them out with pliers before inserting the new part.
