Q: Has the problem of the item having the potential to come apart when attaching/detaching been rectified? I won't buy it unless it has.

I bought mine a while ago and had to machine in hinge caps to prevent the problem. It’s very fixable if you can do precision drill and tap for the 2-56 stainless screws you need to create the hinge caps

Q: Can the black mounting surface be removed (unscrewed) from the mount, if so, what are the threads on the mount itself?

Absolutely, 1/4 -20 bolt holds the clamp to the base..

Q: What size screws do you use for the AMP holes?

2-56 Stainless with flat washers and loc-tite
