Sorry I don't know. I am happy with the build and the sound quality. Hard to beat for the price and the same as my original ones from the eighties

I have a first generation ipod. will the volume control on the headphones work on my ipod?

This has an analog (sliding potentiometer) volume control so it will work with anything. The remote button may be another story. It works fine on my Android, but Apple doesn't always work the same.

Can anyone comment on the microphone for call quality? The original model had problems with echo which might be why Koss moved it down.

I haven't had any problems with this microphone. As a matter of fact, communications on both ends of any of my calls are crystal clear.

Is the cable spring reinforced like the new koss kph30i? Also, can you skip songs with the remote and fast forward?

No the cable is not reinforced. It's a different cable that also includes a volume control slider. You can pause, skip, go back, answer, hangup. trigger Assistant or Siri.
