Excellent anatomical model; replica of actual adult skull w/all of the features + a great price...
This is an excellent anatomical model of the human skull. It is life-sized, as described and very highly detailed. It is heavy and feels sturdy. I think it would be a great study aid for anatomy students. The different bones are painted in different colors to facilitate learning the individual skeletal elements of the cranium (8 bones) and the face (14 bones). There is a key showing four views of the skull: anterior, lateral, inferior and a superior view of the floor of the cranium (with the calvarium removed) and each element is numbered. Since this is modeled from an actual skull, there are tons of details that are not included in the key, but would be great for home study. It can quite difficult to learn all of the features of the bones from a text book and then translate that into identifying them on a 3D model. When you can hold the model in your hands and turn it in any direction, it is easier to under stand the relationship between all of the bones (identifying the sphenoid bone and its features n an anterior view is a lot different than a lateral, superior or inferior view). I especially like that the pegs and magnets holding the calvarium in place are very sturdy. The mandible is held in place with a spring as well a plastic socket on each side overlying the actual temporomandibular joint. The mandible can be moved to show the details of the joint as well as to demonstrate the action of the jaws in chewing and speaking + the dental arches. The painting is not perfect but very well done, although some of the colors used are very close to each other and may initially cause confusion -- the lacrimal bones are almost the same shade as the sphenoid bone and the color of the frontal bone is too similar to the zygomatic bones. When taking courses, lab time is limited and this is a great way to extend that time into more effective studying at home, for very little cost. There are so many ways to use this beyond just learning the bone elements of the skull -- Which structure passes through this foramen? Which muscle attaches to this process? Which muscle originates in this fossa? What type of joint is this? What is the developmental origin of this bone?Is this anatomical model equal to the beautifully painted and meticulously detailed ones seen in most advanced anatomy labs (each one of which might cost hundreds of dollars or more)? No, of course not, but I think this is definitely worth the very modest cost of $32.99. I'm very glad to have it and I have it on my bookshelf. It would be a nice addition to a basic lab, and it is great for students to have at home as it is so affordable as well as for just about anyone else that would like to know more about the skull.

Great Model but Some Flaws
This life-sized human skull model is great for those who want to learn the anatomy of the skull! It is an anatomically correct replica of the human skull which helps learners identify and remember the cranial and facial bones. It is sturdy and the learner can move the mandible (jaw) up and down with the spring attached to the top of the maxilla bone. The top of the skull also comes apart and is easily put back together. The top of the skull easily separates, allowing the learner to see how the cranial bones are broken up inside the skull. It also helps the learner get a good idea of how the brain is situated and how the medulla oblongata (lowest part of the brainstem) passes through the foramen magnum (opening in the occipital bone). The model comes with a guide that labels fourteen parts of the skull. While not all parts are accounted for, this helps the learner understand where the bones of the skull are located and what they are called. Those who are already familiar with the skull and know the parts do not need this guide, however, it is good for those who are just beginning to learn. This skull model is extremely detailed! The sutures (immovable joints) are clearly defined on the skull. In addition to the sutures, the foramen are also visible. Foramen, which are essentially holes in the bone, are accurately depicted in this model. While the suture and foramen names are not listed on the guide, the skull model can still help teach learners about them. The painting on the model is good, however, in some spots, it is slightly messy. The paint of one bone sometimes runs over the suture lines and into another bone. Also, when the skull is opened, you can see that some of the paint of the frontal and parietal bones leaked onto where the two parts of the skull come together. Another flaw with the painting is that some colors used are similar. The paint color on the zygomatic and frontal bones is extremely close. The paint color on the lacrimal and sphenoid bones as well looks identical. This can make it slightly confusing for the learner to decipher which part of the skull is which. While the mandible moves and the top part of the skull comes off, it would be more helpful if the skull came apart entirely. If all the different bones of the skull could come apart, learners would be able to put it back together and get a better sense of how the skull is formed. This would make the experience more interactive and learners would be more likely to remember the location of the different bones. While this model is not perfect, it allows learners to get a good idea of the anatomy of the skull. If you are looking for an accurate painted model of the human skull, this model is a great choice. While it definitely does lack in some aspects, there is no doubt that it makes up in others. The moveability of the mandible shows how the jaw moves in order to eat or talk, and the opening of the skull shows how the bones are oriented inside the skull. It is also incredibly detailed and comes with a good guide. Overall, this model is a great tool to use to learn about the bones of the skull!

Awesome Bookend or Decorative Piece!!!
Loving my new Skull, bright colors and actual size of a human skull with lots of Details inside and out!!! I think it would be excellent for basic anatomy classes at lower levels of undergrad or high school, but not for Med students!! I also think it is perfectly fabulous for a neurosurgeon to have as an Aid in his/her office!! Personally I got it and decided to put it on the end of a shelf on my entertainment center with some books on it and with other interesting objects d' art!!! It looks SO COOL really loving it, It is heavy and strong enough to hold up one end of a dozen books and it is SO Unique and Sweet!! Thank you!!!

Good model for learning
This life-sized skull is in no shape or form flimsy - it feels heavy in the hand and durable, can be manipulated on a regular basis without falling apart. (This is important for me as I am currently trying to ace my nursing A&P prerequisite class and I need hands on learning aids to memorize all the bones and their function). Each bone is painted a different color to help differentiate, the top can be removed, and the jaw moves up and down. There are a few little flaws (the leaflet doesn’t contain detailed information about the foramen for example, even though they are represented in the model), and one of the wisdom teeth is broken on mine), but I’m not looking for perfect anyway… I doubt anyone has a perfect skull in real life anyway! If you are like me and need a hands on learning aid this is a great choice and for the price really is great value for money. And to be honest it looks really cool on my shelf too!
