No battery backup is fine for me, as I can see my air handler is down if it's not working. The most important thing to remember when replacing any thermostat, is to turn off all the power to the unit from where the power is coming from, that powers the thermostat. On Heat pumps, this would the power to the air handler indoors. If you fail to turn the power off, you will short out the 24-26 volt transformer that provides power to control your units. While the transformer is relatively inexpensive, and easily replaced, most folks will end up calling in a repairman to get their system back in operating order.
