I have read many books on trading psychology, this is the ONE you need to read. Perfectly debunks how the subconsciousness works (things you won't figure out just by yourself). I highly, highly recommend reading this book for every trader. To point out some criticism as well: trading methods are only touched and this shouldn't be the aim of aim book on trading psychology but it was a necessary addition to prove some points. And when it comes to actual trading styles, every writer has a bias. I disagree that trading style can be spilt into 2 trading approaches "house-approach" vs "player-approach". Indeed most trader can be put into one of these categories but there is a third category witch is none. Other than that, this is a great book and easily deserves 5 starts. READ IT

I will start by saying that having met Steven and talked to him at a trading conference, I was really looking forward to this book to see how he would distil his years of knowledge & experience into just a few hundred pages. Steven is a very engaging speaker, has years of practical experience of both trading and coaching and is very honest about what it takes to succeed as a trader. The book doesn't disappoint at all. Steven presents a practical framework for dealing with the psychological challenges that we all face as traders, that can be used by beginner and experienced trader alike. As each stage of the framework is presented and explained, examples are given of situations when Steven himself or one of his clients has faced a particular issue and how he used the framework to deal with it and find a solution. A thoroughly enjoyable read that I finished in a few days whilst on holiday and am now re reading so that I can make notes and apply the framework to my own trading. I would highly recommend this book, not just for traders, but for anyone in a high performance environment where mindset & psychology are key to success.

Steven Goldstein’s Mastering the Mental Game of Trading is a treasure trove of insights, but what truly elevates it is the Performance Process Cycle. This framework has completely reshaped how I approach trading by breaking down the psychological phases traders experience in their decision-making process. The cycle begins at the Being Phase, where traders find clarity and presence of mind. It then progresses to the Trigger (Production Phase), where market conditions prompt action. From there, it moves into the Act (Performance Phase), where decisions are made and executed, followed by the Outcome (Letting Go Phase), where traders must process results without attachment before resetting back to the Being Phase. Goldstein explains each phase with incredible depth, showing how this cycle mirrors the rhythm of effective trading. Personally, the emphasis on the Being Phase struck a chord with me. By focusing on self-awareness and mental reset, I’ve been able to approach trading with a clearer mind, free from the weight of previous outcomes. The Letting Go Phase was another standout, as it helped me break the habit of caring too much about the outcome of past trades and reset my mind quickly, allowing me to be in the optimal mental state to make sound decisions for the next trade. Since adopting the Performance Process Cycle, I’ve seen greater consistency in my trading and a stronger ability to stay calm under pressure. Goldstein’s insights have also led me to evolve my approach by tracking both the technical and emotional aspects of each trade in my trading journal. This has helped me identify behavior patterns, refine my decision-making, and ultimately trade with more clarity and confidence. This book isn’t just another trading guide—it’s a blueprint for mastering the mental aspects of the craft. If you’re serious about trading success, the Performance Process Cycle alone makes this a must-read.
