They do turn black with ash around the burners. It does come off with a wipe down.

I didn't want to use the red lava rock that came with our propane fire pit, so gave this a try. It classes things up quite a bit. Ordered 20lb and it was perfect.

I am updating this review. My original review will stand but I am upgrading from 1 star to 4 stars because of the customer service which is outstanding. I received a very nice email from the company and was offered a full refund because they do not want their customers to be dissatisfied with their product. This personal touch is worth the 4 stars in my book. So, if you are going to be using these in a fire pit, they will be ok. The color is very pretty & should had a touch of class to your firepit. I purchased these for my rock garden hoping it would add a little sparkle to the rocks. Unfortunately, they are big and bulky, and they will not lay flat to give me the effect I was hoping for. I was disappointed that a 10 lb. jar did not have as many stones as I would have thought there should be. So, like I said, just be sure you know what you will be using these for.
