Theoretically, this USB 2.0 extension hub reads data from a hard drive when the terminal (computer, laptop, tablet, notebook) provides a 5V output voltage.And the output voltage can be variable due to various factors, for example, as we tested it with an Apple MacBook Pro, it reads data from the hard drive without a problem, because the USB from the MacBook Pro is directly connected to the motherboard without voltage reduction.When we used it with a computer, we found the back USB port which is nearer to the motherboard can recognize the extension hub instantly, whilst the front USB port takes quite a period or just did not read at all, because the front port's cord is extended from the motherboard, the longer the wire is, the more possibility the voltage gets reduced.The output voltage can be detected precisely with the aid of a voltage gauge meter.
