There are no threads on to spindle and it is not tapered on the inside. There are 8 adapters for the taps to fit in. **Q: Are taps held in place by set screws in collets?** A: Yes, best to replace screw with allen set screws. Current screw slot damages too easy. Be sure to grind a flat on the side of the tap or else it will not stay in the adapter **Q: Are 0, 2 and 4 adapters available. From where? Thx.** A: I do not know. I modified my machine to hold additional adapters. The machine is of good quality but the adapters are not usable, in my opinion. **Q: Has anybody thought of adapting a tap socket like the Vermont American 21906 or 21908 into the spindle or machine a new spindle to accept the .747" cy** A: I do a lot of no to low volume parts for the auto restoration business. Some are onesies and some most are tens and one I've done over a thousand of. Ya never know what folks will want. It's a retirement "job" and keeps me busier than I'd like sometimes. I got the tapper because I had a bunch of 5mm x .5 threads to do in stainless and they had to be good and, especially, upright to the adjacent surface. Yes, I could have set it up in the mill or DP, but that's a pain and I really needed good feel since I was tapping laser cut holes and they are "crusty". On later parts, I've had the holes cut a bit undersized and I drill them to size. Works better, but I still like to feel how it's going. I've never been much of a power tapper especially with smaller sizes. The residue from the laser cutting is some kind of "carbide" and it's hell on cutting tools, but drills are cheaper than the weird, semi standard taps. Good luck with the modification. Let me know how it works out and I may do the same thing, it seem like a good idea and I have plenty of tap handles around as it seems like there's a couple in every estate sale bunch of tools.
