It isn't "giant" but it is about the largest you can get without making your pocktbook cry - i know, i looked everywhere. I've wanted an oversized chess set since i was little and i was so excited to order this for an upcoming party. Chess is popular with my extended family and this was a huge hit. I think we had a dozen people crowded around, especially since the large pieces make for good observation. It feels more exciting to play even though it's just chess. The pieces and carrying case are good. The provided board, not so much. The pieces are lightweight, so the wrinkles in the folded up plastic tablecloth-like board can cause the pieces to topple over. I made a better version with two pieces of 2'x4' mdf hinged in the middle and painted with a checkerboard, which fits well on top of a square card table. This way the board is up off the floor (no adult wants to crawl on the floor like the kids in the product photos) and the playing surface is even and flat. If you can imagine a 4' square playing board with 6" squares, the pieces are proportional. Not giant, but big enough to be special and impressive. I think i threw away the original board - if i want something more packable i will sew a checkerboard out of fabric to play on. Pros: - large pieces turn everone into a chess nerd - fantastic for parties, esp for introvert friends who avoid yard games - carrying case is handy - affordable compared to others Cons: - you'll want a better board than the provided plastic tablecloth. Fortunately, not difficult to make. - pieces are hollow, lightweight and might get blown around on breezy days. Needs a hard, flat playing surface. Thinking about adding weight to the base sections. - white pieces are a yellowed ivory that looks a bit dingy Does anyone really "need" an oversized chess set? No. Is it a super cool thing to own that will make people ooh and aah for years to come? Yes.

It would have been 5 stars if it had been a complete set. Mine was opened and was missing the king and queen from one color.

Who wouldn't want to spend a nice sunny day deeply considering the next ten moves in a great game of chess right there on your lawn next to the sunscreen and lawn chair? Cons: ---------------- * Pictures of the product give the impression that this set may rival those seen in amusement parks or malls, where the pieces are half the size of an adult and moving them takes legwork. The real size (which is noted in the text description) is only a few times larger than the average piece. * The stakes for use with the chess aren't terribly lengthy, so for any ground that isn't dense lawn grass, you may need to employ a deeper stake (I used tent stakes that could be driven deeper into the ground. Pros: ------------- * The sizable pieces give a tangible, visceral sense of delight to the engagement. It won't improve your chess game innately, but (win or lose) it still just feels cool. * The mat for the board is above average, rain resistant, and not too crinkly such that it would make moving pieces on the board prohibitive. * The container works perfectly for unpacking and packing the kit up. Stores well in a condensed manner for easy storage. Verdict: * Ignoring the intentionally skewed pictures that mimic a much larger sized product, the actual Giant Chess Set, on its own merits, is a delightful and unique show stealer on your lawn. We deploy it in the campfire area, so it gets use while we camp, make hot dogs and smores, and exercise our minds through chess.

It's great. But I was missing a pawn and got an extra knight and rook.
