Expensive but worth it
Only a few days in but so far I’m really impressed. I had a roomba vacuum and a roomba mop years ago and found them to be more of a hassle than a help. This device seems to have none of the annoyances, but all of the benefits and more. It takes some time and effort to set it up, map the house, create a schedule, etc. But once you’ve done that, it’s pretty much set it and forget it, aside from keeping the water tank filled and the waste tank empty. It cleans the pads on its own, it remembers where it was if it needs to stop and recharge so it’s not wasting time cleaning the same spots again, it empties the dust collected into the base, it does it all. Is it expensive? Yes. But it’s still better value for money than the cheaper ones that require a lot of manual intervention, cleaning, refilling, etc.

It’s saved me hours of time!
Let me start by saying we’ve had robot vacuums for over a decade and this is by far the cream of the crop. We originally started with a Roomba vacuum in the days of bouncing off walls until the battery got low and leaving the job without completion. We then moved onto 3 different Neato vacuums and always hoped they would make a robot map. Well, THIS IS IT! We’ve had the Dreame X40 Ultra for about a month and this thing hasn’t skipped a beat. It diligently vacuums and mops and our floors are clean and dry every morning. This device has spoiled us and we’ll never go back to manually vacuuming and mopping floors. The mop gets to almost everywhere and the extending side brush grabs dirt and debris down in every last corner! The ONLY issue with the device is refilling the clean water and emptying the waste water. I really can’t wait for Dreame to release an automatic water fill and drain add-on in the United States. But if our only issue is having to spend 2 minutes every 3rd day handling water it isn’t a flaw of the device but just laziness. If you’re on the fence, if you’re looking at other brands, if you’ve had a bad experience with a robot in the past, if you’ve anything… just forget it and buy the Dreame X40 Ultra.

Great!
I love this little vacuum! Strong suction and lightweight. I have 3 big dogs, and this does an amazing job keeping up with them.

one star off for area rugs workaround
I have some rather thick area rugs and when the x40 gets to them it thinks that they are an obstacle and attempts to go around them. My first thought was to add a threshold to the map at the edge of the rug but that did not help so I had to find a different workaround, which I did. Now this is a strange one but what I ended up having to do was to place a curtain on the map at the edge of the rug. Crazy, right? But the curtain modifier on the map tells the robot to push on through and ignore what it is seeing as an object in the way. Once I set the curtain all along the edge of my thick pile area rug the robot continues up onto the rug with no problem at all. This is the strangest way of getting it to work, but it does work now and the robot can now clean my entire house and not just the places without area rugs, which in my case is good because if this didn't work, the robot would be useless for me. I bought this robot to replace my last one which had similar problems and no workaround. I could review everything else about this robot but so many other people already have, it's a pretty terrific little machine and the mapping on the app is the best that I have ever used and I have used many.

Don't Update Firmware
Initially the device worked great. The problems started when I updated the firmware. I waited about a week before updating the firmware because of forums online stating issues with the new firmware. After I finally decided to give the update a try, it turned into a totally different machine in all the wrong ways. The object avoidance seemed to not work well anymore. The robot would now gladly scrape itself down my entire brick fireplace where before it would always leave about 1cm of clearance between it and the bricks before the update. This caused obvious deep scratches in the side of the machine. The biggest downside of the update, however, is that the robot now adds auto-detected carpet EVERYWHERE that has to be manually removed every time the robot runs. It will add about 20-30 random patches of what it thinks is carpet all over my house which is 100% hardwood. These patches of carpet have to be removed manually, one at a time, which is very time consuming to micro manage. When it adds these patches of carpet it will refuse to mop those areas and it also takes weird routes around them when simply vacuuming. Since I was still well within my 30 day return window, I quickly returned the device. I would have simply rolled back to the old firmware, but Dreame does not support or allow this. My suggestion is to just use it out of the box and never update the firmware as it was a great machine with the original firmware.

Worked well for a while
I’ve had the robot for about a year. We live in a mud pit under construction with 3 large dogs, so it’s been TESTED. Held up and performed well for the first 3 months; gave up on the mopping after that, but still vacuumed effectively for another 6 months. Performance really started to fall off after that. I would not pay the full price for newer Dreamehome models, but the discount price for the older ones might be worth it. The user interface is definitely non-English-speaking. It’s usable for English speaking users, but can cause some confusion. For example, many of the action buttons are labeled as past tense, so they appear to be saying the action has already been taken. For example, the button to pause cleaning says “Cleanup paused” while the robot is cleaning. Not a massive issue, but may be a consideration.

impressive cleaning companion
The Dreame X40 robot vacuum is an impressive cleaning companion that combines sleek design with powerful performance. It navigates seamlessly around furniture, effortlessly transitioning between hardwood and carpet. With strong suction and smart mapping, it captures everything from dust to pet hair. The accompanying app offers convenient scheduling and real-time tracking. With a battery life of up to 150 minutes, it covers large areas efficiently, returning to its dock to recharge as needed. Quiet yet effective. Try to use it as often as you can.
