great cat shelves
These shelves are the best investment we have made for our cat’s happiness thus far! After moving into a house with a balcony from the second floor hallway into the living room, we found these shelves to solve a major issue (our cats were jumping the 12.5 feet from the second floor straight to the ground because they’re psychopaths) As a hail mary, we bought these hoping they’d take them as a safer route from point a to point b since they were determined to go down one way or another. We painted the shelves to match our kitchen cabinets and they look amazing to start. Everything was easy to put together and the instructions were clear. These easily covered enough height to give the cats safely spaced steps to go up and down the wall between the two floors of the house. My only concern after putting these up was if it would be sturdy enough for my large 21lb ragdoll, and they have exceeded my expectations! The shelves are tough enough to withstand earth rumbling plops as he slinks between the steps and long hours of him lounging.Because everything is just wood, we did also attach some soft scratching pads and a bed in one of the pieces so they had some softer places to lay, which was incredibly easy as these are kind of blank slates for customization!

It's good, but needs minor adjustments
First... Your arm and hand will get really sore if you don't have a drill with an alan wrench attachment. Second, the tunnel HAS to be more secure because the arch holes aren't very deep and the fabric is just secured with velcro. I used finish nails on the arches and to secure the fabric to the velcro. Third, one of my cats are chunky and I felt the tunnel needed extra support so I just used 2 strike guards from a door handle assembly I had on hand to screw to the bottom connecting pieces.I also changed the layout design and only needed to drill 3 extra holes, but the wood isn't super hard so it was easy for me.I like the size of the platforms, the box and tunnel. I like that I can unscrew the scratching posts and rewrap them eventually once the cats destroy them. And despite the adjustments, I'm glad I got this.

I don’t normally write reviews, but this was worth it!
These cat shelves were planned to be a project for me from the beginning. You’ll be putting together every shelf from its individual pieces, but the instructions are easy to understand with the pictures and they give you all the screwdrivers/allen wrenches/screws you’ll need for this part. After that, I wanted to paint them, so I sanded down the edges first. The wood is solid, good quality, not particle board. The edges weren’t dangerously rough to the point where they’ll hurt kitty paws, but definitely needed to be sanded down if they were going to be painted successfully. I used acrylic paints and then a clear coat spray afterwords. My primary complaint is that one of the shelves, the green one, was supposed to have the holes for the bridge (2 holes) & scratching pole (1 hole) reversed. Instead, they matched the holes on the blue shelf. It seems like a small issue, but it completely altered the configuration of (and then where I had to put up) the shelves, so it’s a two-tier system instead of a line-up like the instructions indicate. You WILL need a power drill to install the wall anchors & screws! If you don’t have a stud finder, I would recommend investing in one since the installation is so big that without it, you’re bound to run into places you can’t drill if you’re just guessing. (Spot the holes next to the yellow shelf? There are more in my stairwell wall because I didn’t heed my own advice!) Also, there are enough screws and anchors for the exact number of holes in the shelves, but if you mess up where an anchor goes, it can be pulled out with pliers and reused if it’s not in bad shape after that. I still had to purchase extra anchors to use for mine, but that was because of my own mistakes. Also, a tip for marking your place on the wall so you don’t have to hold up the heavier pieces while fiddling with a pencil— Use toothpaste! Dab a bit on the back of the shelves where the holes are and put them up against the wall where you want to install them. When you pull it away, the toothpaste will leave a perfect stamp showing you where to drill, and it’s easy to wipe off! (For anyone who doesn’t know this yet or hasn’t had to do this before, you drill a hole in the wall the size of your anchor, then hammer the anchor in, then install the shelf by screwing it into the anchors!)As far as the utility of the product now that the hefty installation process is done, it’s working great! It’s quite sturdy and Pooter loves it! He had to be lured up there with treats and taught how to hop up on it from the desk, but he goes up on his own now and seems to love the height and the scratching pole especially. He doesn’t use the bridges, but it’s easy for him to jump from one platform to another and I think the bridges help him feel safe enough to do that.I price compared a ton of sets like this, comparing the cost of buying individual shelves versus a full set. I really feel like I got the bang for my buck with this one, even if I accidentally made the installation process trickier than it should’ve been. Even with my minor complaints, I definitely recommend this set!

Get different hardware
My two cats love playin on these shelves. The biggest downside was the cheap wall anchors, I absolutely would not recommend anyone use them. I tried using multiple different drill bit sizes for the pilot hole and would never get a positive anchor. I ended up going to Lowes and getting some very heavy duty anchors, not cheap at all but it gives me great relief knowing these shelves will not be coming out of the wall under ANY circumstance. I used a butterfly type of metal anchor (except the bar is solid). Some of these shelves protrude over a foot from the wall and at times both my cats will be on one together and I don’t want to worry about them falling from 8ft down onto a concrete floor. I wouldn’t hang a heavy picture using the provided anchors they gave. Also you can see from the picture the green tube thing is damaged now, not really a product issue, just something to be aware of. My cats tend to jump on top of it rather than crawl through it causing the cloth to become distorted over the supports. The velco holds the material down nicely but I would recommend assembling the supports with some wood glue and using a staple gun on the tunnel material where it rests on the supports. Or omitting the tunnel altogether and just using it as a shelf which is probably what I will end up doing.

Very nice
Working beautifully for the last year. No cracks or anything that I can see yet, and they were easy to stain to the color I wanted.
