You just screw the base of the lamp into the wall. The wire hangs from the bottom of it and you can plug it into nearest outlet.

You most definitely can mount it to the wall without a junction box- in fact you couldn't mount it to a junction box. It comes with a metal plate for mounting directly to the wall.
