Great little unit and great price
This is an excellent product to purchase. Originally I had ordered the 4 bay unit but had issues with the software and general use of the permissions. Not only that, with being only a 4 bay unit, I was limited to drives to use and with the ability to use TRAID, a larger unit (6 Bay) would be better. I had returned the unit and then purchased the 6 bay unit when it became available (at the time 4 bay was only available). Thankfully after a few months of waiting, software by Terramaster had improved and the setup process is much better. I would advise anyone considering this unit to look at some of the reviews by NAScompares to understand the functionality and setup process. Noise level of the unit is quite noisy, so would keep either this locked in a cupboard. As there is no storage on this unit, please have at least 3 hard drives to populate, along with purchasing an SSD for much better performance. If you setup the unit with just mechanical hard drives, you will find it runs quite slow. Also purchase an extra 32GB RAM to speed up processing. I am running PLEX on this unit and streaming is much better with the encoding done by this i5 processor.

Not fit for purpose - certainly avoid if you intend to use for business.
Before we start: This review is coming from someone with forty years of IT experience with both undergraduate and post graduate degrees. I have previous experience with other NAS units. Not trumpet blowing, lets just saying "I'm not a newbie". I suspect, like myself and many, you are here because Synology is now forcing customers to buy their expensive and hard to find validated HDD, so you're looking for an alternative. On first inspection this ticks all the boxes for and entry level NAS as a decent price. I'm very sorry I purchased it though and am now looking at have to write it off as a bad (and expensive) mistake. So why so bad? - Documentation is pretty much non existent. Almost nothing in the box and the downloaded manual leaves a lot to be desired. EG - the first thing your NAS will tell you to do is to turn on internet security. Great, good idea. That then prevents you installing any apps at all, until you turn it back off - not it tells you that! Installation of apps using auto set up ghost 'application users' is far from transparent. The worst though (as alluded to by another review here) is the NAS becomes unresponsive every few days. The tech support 'solution' is to reinstall the OS. No explanation as to why the OS would become corrupt, or how one would prevent it from happening again in the future. Of course 'reinstall the OS' does mean backing up all your data (just in case) and reinstalling all apps, setting up users and access, rescanning any data (and possible repopulating and lost data) - NOT something you want to be doing all the time if at all. I will do an OS reinstall but I'm not inspired with confidence. Luckily this is mainly just used as a media server. I really like to get my money back on this piece of junk.

A Good Entry Level Unit For Those On A Budget
Hello and welcome to my review of the Terramaster F6-424. The TL;DR is that overall, the unit scores a 4 out of 5. Value for Money - 4: With the £100 off I got—and even without it—I think it's one of the most aggressively priced options on the market for my needs. TOS - 3: While it has plenty to offer, sometimes it's just got a lot going on, and it can be confusing and daunting for those new to the NAS software space. You're going to need to do your homework and spend some time reading. Don't just go in blind like I did. Customer Service - 5: Great team that is responsive and friendly. Design - 4: Small and sleek. While it's plastic, it's still a good-looking device. Who is this for? People who need a lot of storage, don't mind putting a little more work to get things going, and are more price-conscious. I'll start this review by saying that I had previously purchased a D5-300C. I was really happy with the product as it allowed me to really increase the external storage of my mini PC workstation, which only has internal M.2 NVMe's. With that bit of context out of the way, I was shopping around for a NAS, which I wanted as a simpler solution for myself and my family. Now, I already have Plex running on my server, and this was meant to be a cloud storage solution that would provide me with a user-friendly interface as well as make things more accessible for a family that really hates anything that requires more than just a simple login. So after obsessively reading around on the internet and watching more hours of YouTube NAS reviews than should be healthy for one person, I landed on the Terramaster F6-424. A few things brought me to this model. Firstly, it's got plenty of space: 6 hard drive bays and 2 NVMe slots. Plus, I loved the fact that it supports drives of 24 TB capacity each, which means 144 TB on the 6 slots. At the time of purchasing, this included a £100 discount; frankly, it was a deal that was too good not to take. Now here's the part where we also need to get real... Not really sure why you would need 144 TB, but equally... I understand, I'm a data hoarder too. Now let's get to the actual unit itself—I really love the sleek black look of the box, and honestly, the old Terramaster design to me was very cute; the new one is more sophisticated for sure. I personally like to keep devices like this hidden away, but if you were to have it on a desk, it would look pretty great (just be careful of buying noisy refurbished drives). Also, the little bays are very easy to access, aside from the M.2 slots, which you will need to unscrew the unit to get to. My initial experience when I got the unit, aside from the look and principle, I must say wasn't really great. I sadly had a noisy fan, which meant every time things spun up, it got way, way too loud for me, to the point that I had to open the unit and disconnect one completely. This was pretty upsetting, and I emailed customer service, who were nice enough to send me some parts. Frankly, the rate at which they were able to help was really great. They single-handedly saved me from returning the unit and moving to some other brand. Now, I may have a bit more of a soft spot for Terramaster here because I do love the overall value that they bring to the table. However, I have to be honest and say that TOS has a lot going on, and frankly, some of it can be quite confusing for the average consumer. In a way, it's a bit of a hodgepodge of systems that, if you don't completely understand it all, it's likely to give you some really mixed or frustrating feelings. The Good: - They have a dedicated Mac and iPhone app, which means you can see your files and back up your photos, which is pretty handy. - I was abroad for a bit and got to use the TOS web app to connect to the NAS back home, which was fun. - It's got a small footprint, meaning it won't take up too much space in your workplace or home, plus you can have it somewhere pretty remote in the house. The Bad: - TOS can be rather confusing, and you need to spend time doing your homework, especially if this is your first time using a NAS OS. - Sync times can really take a while—but that's what you have to contend with when you are installing a bunch of 24 TB drives and using TRAID. My advice is to add them gradually, not all at once. All in all, while it was a shaky start, I have to say I'm still going to keep my unit and keep working with TOS, seeing how I can get the most out of it. I do have to say that in a world of iPhones, we all just expect things to work without putting in much effort. I had my moment of frustration, took a breath, and actually started to read and spend more time with the OS. What I've found is that TOS has a lot of depth, and frankly, some of it is more than I need right now, but it's great to know that if I ever need to scale my data housing solutions for my family, it's all there waiting for me. Hope this helped :)

Easy to install, easy to use, great NAS
As a small business owner who was looking to ensure I had a resilient NAS configuration (RAID1) with an easy install, easy setup and easy backup utility for all my business digital assets the TerraMaster F5-221 has been brilliant (see my digital image). The TerraMaster F5-221 sits easily next to my Laptop, makes almost no noise at all. Quiet device packed with functionality. I have 5 bays in case my business NAS storage needs grows, currently 2 x 4TBs. The TerraMaster applications for managing my NAS have enable me to achieve the business objectives and there are applications which I have not yet used but will certainly use as my business develops. Does the TerraMaster F5-221 provide great value for the money spent? Yes. My score is 5 out of 5.

While the software is fine for basic NAS. There are some limitations. most UPS use USB lead to connect to a server. If you connect your UPS to the NAS the NAS will not act as server for your PCs. IF you run a NUT-Server the NAS will not connect as LAN client. So it needs its own UPS. Terra-Master do have regular updates but for some reason it will not auto update. You have to do it manually over all it's physical hardware is excellent, software isn't as good, but it does what is needed and much cheaper than other brands.
