Columbia never disappoints with their clothing. I’ve been buying this style of jacket for years for my hard-to-fit son (2XLtall). It’s perfect for men over 6’ tall. Not completely waterproof, but good for light rain. Nice colours that don’t fade, and holds up to machine washing and drying. Full price tends to be a bit steep, but they’re often on sale if you’re not fussy about the colour.

One of the frustrating things about being an active plus-size woman, particularly one that carries a substantial amount of weight in the chest or belly, is the near-total lack of high-quality technical gear available for purchase. Most companies assume that if you’re overweight, you must not go outside in inclement weather, and most certainly not to *gasp* exercise! As many plus-size people out there know, many of us do both, and many of us are committed to improving or restoring our health, be it from weight-gain due serious injury or illness, or from simply choosing a healthier path in life. (Both happen to apply in my case.) The problem as a woman, however, is the extremely limited range of plus sizes in high-quality technical gear. Columbia is one of the only brands to have plus-sizes at all, but even theirs only go up to a 3X for women. And, unfortunately, their 3X is more like a 1X-2X in other plus-size brands like Penningtons. That leaves women over 240 lbs out in the cold (literally and figuratively). However, plus-size women, there is hope. I ordered this Columbia men’s plus-size jacket in 4X and it was the equivalent of a women’s 4X at Penningtons. Just as important (and rather surprising): the sleeves are not excessively long like most men’s jackets. They’re only slightly too long for my arms (about an inch) which is easily dealt with by using the Velcro straps. The rest of the jacket is equally well-proportioned. While it doesn’t hug the hips in a feminine way, it’s not bulky or pouchy in other areas, and easily passes as a unisex or women’s jacket in my opinion. As expected from Columbia, the jacket materials are superb. The jacket is very lightweight, waterproof, breathable, and exceptionally comfortable. It’s infinitely more comfortable and higher-quality than any of the plus-size department store-brands I tried, and it’s about 40% less expensive. Highly recommend to anyone who is plus-size and desires excellent outdoor gear.
