## Description

Edwin Jagger DE86 Classic Double Edge Manual Eco-Friendly and Reusable Safety Razor for Men and Women for Shaving cream or Soap Fits All DE Razor Blades (Imitation Ebony) : desertcart.co.uk: Health & Personal Care

Review: EASY TO USE DE SAFETY RAZOR - I'm in my 50's,and up to now, I've never thought of using a double edge safety razor, to be honest, having seen my grandad and great grandad using them, i always thought that they would a bit more dangerous than disposables or cartridges razors, you know, more likely to cut yourself, but i was wrong. I have two different cartridge razors and a electric wet and dry shaver, but the price of the replacement cartridges for those is a bit of a joke, sick of paying £16 to £20 for those, so, after a bit of investigation into safety razors, i decided to buy this Edwin Jagger exclusive to desertcart safety razor, and what a revelation, so pleased i did. On opening the box up, and putting the razor together, i thought that the handle was a little short, but it's not been a problem for me, i can hold onto it quite comfortably, i don't have small hands, but i don't have giant hands either. Onto the shaving, i decided to buy the whole kit, brush soap etc, i got Proraso shaving soap in a dish for sensitive skin, it had good reviews, anyway, with a little bit of trepidation, i soaped my face up and proceeded with the shaving, and what a revelation, no need to be nervous about using this razor, no pressing, just let the razor do the work, after the first pass, the shave was easily as good as a cartridge razor, gave my face another soaping, and went over again, and I've got to say it's the best shave I've ever had, no nicks or cuts, and a really close shave, absolutely no need for any worries on that front. And the price i paid for this was actually less than a pack of cartridge replacements. Yes, i know i will have to buy blades for this, but you can get 100 for a fraction of the price, and, they're easily recyclable, being as they're all metal. To add, i don't shave every day, 2 or 3 times a week, and i don't have coarse facial hair, so for me this razor is great, for others, i wouldn't know, but if you are looking for a first double edge safety razor, from my experience i would 100% recommend this, a nice size, nice weight, good looking, easy to use razor, well made.
Review: Excellent razor, easy to use and very good quality - Excellent razor - I'd never used a DE razor before, but I did read up on what to look for and how to prepare for a shave before ordering this. The initial outlay for razor, blades, brush, soap etc did seem quite a lot initially but this will quickly be recouped by the savings made by not buying the expensive 3/4/5-blade cartridges that I've been using for far too many years. Quite a few people recommended the Proraso range of pre-shave, soaps, brushes etc, so I bought these at the same time as the razor - very pleased that I did as I found the shaving experience to be so much more satisfying than anything I've tried before. Yes, it takes longer to shave than a quick hack-and-slash with a cartridge razor, but the result is much smoother and satisfying. Preparation seems to be key to a good shave - I apply the pre-shave cream a few minutes before lathering up and that works well. I was a bit nervous at first as I imagined it might turn into a bit of a bloodbath, but I shaved very carefully and avoided making any nicks at all - the trick is to avoid putting any pressure on the razor, just letting the weight of the razor do the job. I've been using the three-pass method too i.e. lather up, cut with the grain, lather again, cut across the grain, lather again, then cut against the grain. I sometimes omit the cut against the grain if I'm not bothered about a super-close shave. I'm so pleased that I've switched over to a DE razor - been thinking about it for a few months, but wish I'd done it years ago. By the way, don't worry about the apparently small size of this razor - it's beautifully weighted and is just the right size to give you precise control; a longer handle would just get in the way. Here's a list of the other products that I bought with the razor, just in case this helps someone:- Brush: Proraso Professional Boar Hair Shaving Brush Brush stand: Kent Shaving Stand Large Mock Ivory Pre-shave: Proraso Pre Shave Cream 300ml Soap: Proraso Shave Soap in Round Pot Sensitive - Nourish - Menthol + Derby Bluebird Rasierklingen Pack of 5 Alum block: Osma Tradition Bloc - Handmade Alum Block (Soothes Shaving Irritation) With Clear Perspex Case 100g Blades: I actually bought these on ebay as they were cheaper - tried the Wilkinson Sword blades first as they were said to be a good beginner's blade, and that's what I've found. I also bought a pack of Personna Platinum and Feather Hi-Stainless to try as well (not used them yet as the Wilkinson Sword blades suit me fine at the moment). Not sure why the razor is illustrated with Derby blades as none were supplied with my razor - I've queried this with desertcart, but I'm not that bothered about the omission. N.B. the alum block was a revelation - just wet it and wipe over the shaved area after you've rinsed off all the lather. This will ease any razor burn, and seal any nicks that you may have made; it stings a bit at first, but is very soothing. After that, mix a small amount of the pre-shave cream with water and smooth into the skin - this acts as a very effective balm and invigorates the skin (I saw a tip somewhere that it can be used as a post-shave balm as well, even though it doesn't state this on the packaging).

## Questions & Answers

**Q: is the handle slippery should it get wet or get some soap on it. and, does having a shorter handle make it more difficult to use??**
A: The handle won't be slippery when wet, but it might when there's excessive soap on it. If you aren't sure, just give it a quick rinse since the water won't hurt it. Personally I like the shorter handle because there's better maneuverability and reminds that this isn't a cartridge razor so that you don't bear down like you might be used to doing. Hope this helps!

**Q: Is it made in England?**
A: They are made in Sheffield England

**Q: Does this product come with a double edge razor?**
A: DE89bl means (DE) double edged, (89) chrome plated, (bl) comes with blade. When "bl" is part of the model number EJ generally provides five DERBY blades.

**Q: do all blades fit?**
A: I have yet to find a double edge blade that will not fit.It also comes with 5 blades.Single edge blades, and cartridges do not fit.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Nick free shaving
*by C***C on 5 February 2013*

As with many others here I'm a recent convert from the disposable blade systems available from Gillette etc...... My first shaving lesson as a teenager was with my fathers guidance using his old school Gillette double edge razor so it seems strange that at the age of 49 I have gone back to this method of shaving but thought I would give it a try and started off with the cheaper Gillette safety razor which for around £6 is not a bad buy to get you started, not sure if it was the razor or the Gillette blades but found I frequently nicked certain areas usually just under my nose or beneath my bottom lip.... When this Edwin Jagger razor arrived earlier today I was impressed with the posh looking box and finding the razor well wrapped up inside in tissue paper instilled a feeling that this was a quality product, the razor has a nice finish and feels a nice weight in the hand. I found blade changing more fiddly than the cheaper Gillette safety razor that I'd previously used and the blades seem to protrude outside of the head sides which I don't really like and had the head been a couple of millimetres wider would have covered this and looked much nicer, the other criticism for me is the handle length, if it was another inch longer then it would be prefect as I can see this is going to annoy me over time but hopefully I will learn to live with it. For my first shave I did the usual hot flannel over my face, followed by a good lathering of soap which I'm now starting to get the knack of creating a good lather, upon putting the razor to my face I was impressed with how smooth the razor was against my skin, no drag whatsoever and it felt almost impossible to nick yourself despite being a little less cautious than with my previous razor, to nick yourself with this setup I would imagine one would need to be quite clumsy or careless as it feels a safe razor to use. The supplied Derby blades are good to try, have no idea how they compare to the Gillette blades I had been using up until now, but I intend experimenting till I find a favourite... I have some Feather blades which I thought I would try on the next blade change as I understand this are the sharpest you can buy, and I was always taught that only a dull blade is a dangerous blade so hoping this is indeed true. Would I recommend this razor? Definitely, but if I could improve it in anyway it would have a longer handle and a slightly wider head so the blade sides are not exposed, it may be that I will upgrade to another razor with the longer handle but I wouldn't hesitate to ensure it's an Edwin Jagger as it's great quality without breaking the bank and its nice to support a British company these days.
