Will this work for wooden or acrylic turned pens?

I do not see why it would not work. I have not used wooden pens, but it’s fine for other finishes. Maybe Urushi would present a problem.

How thick or paded is the middle part? And is it a velvet?

Its velvety but not padded or particularly thick, more like a rigid sheet maybe an 1/8" or so
