Review: Good NIC with speeds as advertised - Edit: I realize now that I was routing this through Tailscale. I just tested again and am getting full line speeds. It took me just 6 minutes to move roughly 250 GB of data which is exceptional. My original review was PEBKAC so changing this to 5 stars. ----- I'm using a high end laptop with USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports, a CAT 7 cable, on a 10gbe end-to-end network, the 10gbe managed switch port is showing it connected at 5gbe full duplex, but I'm getting speeds barely above the 1gbe onboard NIC. Not remotely close to 5gbps. And not even 2.5gbps. I don't recommend this and won't continue using it.
Review: It's ok - I don't normally do reviews, this is for the 5gig model. Out of the box experience is HORRIBLE. Windows can not download a proper driver, it trys to use one from 2016. Research showed it uses an RTL8157 chipset and all you have to do is download the driver from Realtek themselves. Went from 1.5gig up and down to 4.75gig which is basically max because of software overhead and blah blah blah. If you absolutely have to have full 5gig. You need to get a 10gig unit. It functions absolutely fine, been playing all day on multiplayer games with zero issues. I have 5gig up and down with ziply fiber. 4ms ping across the board. Recommend

## Features

- FULL 5Gbps NEEDS A USB 3.2 GEN 2 (10Gbps) PORT: Plug into a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port and connect to a 5GbE router/switch with a CAT6a (or better) cable to reach the full 5Gbps. On a USB 3.0 / 3.1 Gen 1 (5Gbps) port, expect around 2.5Gbps — still a big jump over standard Gigabit.
- TRUE MULTI-GIG, AUTO-NEGOTIATING: Automatically connects at 5GbE, 2.5GbE, 1GbE, or 100Mbps to match your network — 802.3bz / 5GBASE-T compliant, backward compatible with all your existing gear. Great for faster NAS access, file transfers, streaming, and low-latency work.
- DETECTED BUT NO CONNECTION? UPDATE THE DRIVER FIRST: Windows 10/11 and macOS are driver-free. If Windows sees the adapter but the link is missing or slow, run Windows Update to pull the current Realtek driver, then restart — that clears most no-connection reports. While you test, plug straight into the computer's USB-C port rather than through an unpowered hub or adapter chain. Linux needs a kernel with a recent Realtek r8157 driver. The newest drivers are on the manufacturer's website, and support can help before you return it.
- USB-C ONLY, AND WIRED ONLY — CHECK BEFORE YOU BUY: This is a wired Ethernet adapter with an integrated USB-C cable — it does NOT add WiFi and it is NOT a cellular 5G/LTE modem; you connect it to a router, switch, or NAS with a network cable. It needs a data-capable USB-C port (USB 3.x / USB4 / Thunderbolt) and will not work on power-only (charge-only) USB-C ports. Supported systems: Windows 10/11, macOS, and Linux with a recent Realtek r8157 kernel driver.
- ALUMINUM BUILD, RTL8157CG CHIPSET: A rugged aluminum housing doubles as a heatsink for stable performance during long transfers. Powered by the Realtek RTL8157CG controller. Bus-powered (no external power) with LED indicators: green = 5GbE, amber = lower speed.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Why am I not getting 5Gbps speeds?**
A: Full 5Gbps needs every part of the chain to support 5GbE: a USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) port, a 5GbE router/switch/NAS, and a CAT6a+ cable. If any link is slower, the adapter auto-negotiates down. Also confirm your source can deliver 5Gbps.

**Q: Why is my connection limited to 2.5Gbps or lower?**
A: The usual cause is a USB 3.0 / 3.1 Gen 1 (5Gbps) port — after USB overhead, real speed lands near 2.5Gbps. Use a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port, confirm your switch and cable (CAT6a+) support 5GbE, and on Windows run Windows Update for the latest Realtek driver.

**Q: Does this work with all USB-C devices?**
A: It works with data-capable USB-C ports (USB 3.x, USB4, or Thunderbolt 3/4). It will NOT work on power-only / charge-only ports. Support on phones and tablets varies; it's built for Windows, macOS, and Linux computers.

**Q: Do I need to install drivers?**
A: Windows 10/11 and macOS are driver-free. If Windows is slow right after plugging in, run Windows Update for the latest Realtek driver. Linux uses a recent Realtek r8157 kernel driver. Newest drivers are on Sabrent.com.

**Q: Why is my adapter warm?**
A: Warmth is normal — the aluminum body acts as a heatsink and multi-gig adapters run warm during sustained transfers. Keep it in open air for long, heavy workloads; performance is unaffected.

### ⭐ Failed within 24 hours
*by J***A on September 30, 2025*

Last night it was working great, full 5Gbs speed in both directions. It was working so well I was going to get up in the morning and write. Rave review. So many of these products are just rebadged mainland junk, so it was great to have something that worked. This morning my computer literally would not boot if this thing was connected. My switch didn’t light up so it wasn’t even going so far as to bring up the hardware. Once I did get it up and running—without the busted adapter plugged in—as soon as I plugged it back in my mouse and keyboard froze. This device didn’t just fail, it failed so hard that it broke USB on my entire computer if it was plugged in. When it was working I was very pleased but the fact that a device can go so far as to prevent enumeration on an entire set of USB ports means the hardware is defective. And this was *FOUR HOURS LATER*. Yes, four. I went to bed late last night, slept like crap, and when I got back up my computer wouldn’t start. All because of this network plug. I know how to troubleshoot this stuff. Really. I could, in theory, write the driver myself. I know how USB works. I know my hardware and the kernel running on it. That is to say, I know when something isn’t just broken but super broken. It’s disappointing. The Sabrent name used to stand for quality. I have several pieces of Sabrent hardware and I’ve always praised them. Well, not any more. I don’t have the time to monkey around with some support goon on the phone, and it’s past the Amazon return window so this thing that cost me over $30 goes into the trash.
