An informative, fascinating and beautifully presented guide to the English language
If you're studying the English language this book is informative, fascinating and beautifully presented too. I used it during a Level 5 course on teaching English in the lifelong learning sector, but it would also suit anyone with an interest in the English language. A good while ago Amazon asked if I wished to sell it on but the answer was a clear no - I didn't want to part with it! Only one problem - the binding in the paperback version has to support a book with many pages. Amazon replaced my first copy when it failed.

Absolute MUST HAVE for all English linguistic fans. Answers more Qs than any other linguistic publication, and I read it for pleasure as well necessity.

Almost everything for Basic English language Knowledge
David Crystal is highly regarded in the English language World, and this book refelcts that. As a first year A level student studying the subject i found this book great in detail and context. It can be used for study in a wide range of courses and degrees. The book isnt made to be read cover to cover and has easy to find sections on many aspects of the English Language from Basic grammar to Sociolinguistics. i would highly recommend this book for all types of people studying or taking an interest in english language.

Essential reading for any student of literacy or English
This book was essential reading for me during my literacy specialist tutor training, and two years later it is still in regular use. If you want to check your use of grammar, wonder what word is used for truanting in South Wales, or are puzzled as to what a morpheme is, the answers are here. It never let me down when I wanted to check something. Not the cheapest or most portable book there is, but definitely the best.

Perfect for anyone taking their AS/A levels, the book offers extensive coverage of the English language. A must have in my opinion.

Some titles seem not sequential.

Bought as a gift for someone. Very nice comprehensive book that describes the history of the English language very thoroughly. Many references and sidebars to things like "where did apostrophes come from?" If you think you know everything about English, get this book and challenge yourself. You won't be disappointed.
