Based on reviews seen, the three pronged version is twice the price with a stiffer cable that a few individuals have complained to be an annoyance and a safety issue causing the iron to move around the work bench after placing it down or on a stand. The heating element quickly transfers heat inside the barrel into the tip. This is something of a marvel compared to other designs that are much less effective and efficient. You can change the tips by loosening the nut on the barrel and pulling out the tip replacing it with another. Just remember for this model FX600, the tips have to be the 18mm versions and not the 19mm which is for a similar looking Hakko soldering iron (which has a higher heating range). There is also more heating tip options for the Hakko FX600 versus the Hakko FX601. The FX600 is the iron you want to use for most soldering jobs. The Hakko FX601 is mainly for stained glass window fame soldering or more for heavier jobs that require a bit more heat. The cable on this soldering iron is quite flexible and important so that you aren't fighting against the cable but also so the iron doesn't start moving around on you workbench.
