Stratux ADS-B Dual Band Receiver Aviation Weather and Traffic - Internal WAAS GPS, AHRS, Battery Pack, Suction Mount, Antennas, SDR

The stratux ads-b dual band receiver is an excellent piece of equipment and highly recommended. I use Wing X and previously used another ads-b dual band receiver until I started to get a lot of radio interference from it. The old unit was bulkier and was not easy to move around. I decided to try the stratux ads-b dual band receiver and pair it with my Wing X on my ipad and it has worked flawlessly. The battery it comes with will keep the unit working for 4 or more hours before it needs a recharge. I have a Mooney Ovation with a G1000 and I compared the traffic and weather on my Wing X ipad with the stratux to the G1000 and it was almost exactly the same. The ahrs feature is also very, very good and comparing the G1000 synthetic vision to the ipad Wing X synthetic vision with the stratux is very similar. I recently took a trip IFR from South Florida to North Carolina and back and used the stratux during the trips. I found it to be very accurate and very reliable. The traffic, weather, ahrs and gps functionality were all excellent and I found it to be a great back up to my G1000. Having previously used another ads-b receiver, I can tell you that the stratux is actually a better unit and an excellent purchase because of its ease of use, portability, functionality, gps quality and functionality, accuracy, and excellent weather, traffic, gps positioning and ahrs capabilities. This is a must have for pilots whether flying VFR or IFR as a backup to your regular flight instruments. I highly recommend it.

I haven’t flight tested it yet, so i cant speak for the weather function. The traffic function is amazing. Set the unit on my window ledge and sat inside watching airplanes as they flew over. i have spare batteries and there’s an adapter included in case you have your own battery. Assembly was super easy. Took 5 minutes tops, took about 30 seconds to connect and see airplanes. The battery that comes with the unit has a plug attached directly to the battery that unfolds and plug conveniently into the side of the Stratux. It has a “home built” look (with the strap for the battery, two antennas, and the actual unit itself, having to unplug it to turn it off) but it’s got twice as many features at less than half the price. It also had no problems picking up a signal from the middle of my living room so I have a hard time believing it’d have any trouble picking up a signal anywhere in an airplane. The fan kicked on a couple of times and seemed to work well to keep it cool. It’s easy to connect to an iPad and to use with ForeFlight. The video provided on youtube by crewdog was excellent. He explained everything very well. I ran it for two hours with no hiccups. My house is underneath the flight path of a busy airport and it always displayed traffic. Very excited to actually use this and see the weather features, but so far i’m Very very impressed with the product. The cable that comes with it is a little too short for a battery, so i may buy a bigger one...but that’s a minor detail. It comes with a 6000 MAH battery and I bought an extra 8000 MAH. It’s only a back up battery anyway. So far, very impressed.

Fantastic! Just got it, so haven't had a chance to use it in the air. However, it was basically plug and play. I turned it on (plugged in the battery) and my iPad recognized the Stratux wifi signal right away. I have Wings X Pro. Stratux associated with it immediately and from my front porch began showing traffic all around. I used Wings X settings to select attitude indicator. Worked perfect and smoothly when I moved the Stratux in pitch and roll. Be sure to point the Stratux correctly forward as indicated on the unit. Otherwise you will get reverse sensing. Can't imagine so much technology being so readily available for us these days! I've been flying for over fifty years and would have never imagined this. Thanks Crew Dog! (And thank you Crew Dog for your military service). Adding. I just took an 800 mile round trip in my non electric Aeronca. I just sat the Stratux on the baggage shelf behind me. Worked great, sending WiFi to my iPad and Wings X Pro. It found satellites quickly and connected to the iPad quickly. The traffic displayed was very helpful, allowing me to see aircraft in my vicinity that I might have missed seeing otherwise. The weather was clear so I didn't have a chance to use the Nexrad weather info. I did buy a larger capacity battery off Amazon for about $20. That battery gave me 8 hours of run time. I used the original battery as a back up standby. Love it!

So first off this little guy works as designed and is a really good value. Foreflight connects right up with my iPad and myself and my CFI both will connect to it for traffic alerts. AHRS works great too... i had a real world vacuum pump failure at night, so I switched on my attitude display in foreflight which was a great safety net. Things to keep in mind though, and I don't want to discourage what you are getting out of this device for the tremendous value that it is, but do keep these in mind on what you give up though by not going with the more expensive alternatives incase you are daily instead of weekly like me: 1. Needs an external battery, and the connector on the raspberry pi in the unit is weak. This isn't the fault of the assembler, the pi's the micro usb connector isn't very robust. I've been using mine for 6 months now and this connector has loosened up and prevented my device from receiving reliable power. I finally pulled it apart thinking i'd have to replace the raspberry pi in it and i was able to bend the connector back into shape and spare it. Thankfully if I do destroy the connector, a replacement PI is cheap and easily swapped. The higher dollar units with their internal batteries do not run into this. 2. The fan has gotten extremely loud when its running...sounds like the bearing is shot in...not sure what the quality is of the fan that comes with it (sleeve bearing perhaps?) but i'm looking for a replacement fan though. Not sure if the higher dollar units even have fans, if they don't then definite ding here. 3. Obnoxious Antennas. They stick out, take up space in my flight back, take up space on the window. Higher dollar units with their integrated antennas don't have this issue. But dollar for dollar, a great value, with these weaknesses I'm only knocking 1 star off because of the great value this device is.

I've flown with this guy several times now and LOVE it. Not only is it fully featured, but it's reliable and so much less costly than the name brand devices out there. I paired mine to Foreflight and it works like a charm. I use the suction cups and stick it to the rear side window in our club Cherokee. Always gets good reception there with the antennas pointing skyward. I have a friend that lays hers on the dash, but it gets awfully hot there in the summer. Haven't had any problems with the Stratux at all. It's a little work to set up initially, but the instructions are really detailed and very well written, and the web site helps too. Videos are so helpful! I can't say enough how much respect I have for Crew Dog. The packaging was excellent, and the kit is very thoughtfully assembled (I bought the version that's prebuilt with only assembly of the battery-to-unit and suction cup bracket needed). As far as bulkiness, I worried about that, with those big ol' antennas and overall size. But it's not an issue at all after using it a bit. I keep the antennas in a slot in my flight bag and the unit in the main compartment with my headset. Prep for flight takes just a couple mins: screw on the antennas, plug the power cord in and stick it on the window. By the time I get get buckled in and set up my iPad, it's ready to go. I also love that this is a small start-up outfit. I don't mind buying good products from big companies, but I LOVE buying them from small competitors who still think like their own customers and love what they do more than just the profit. You go, Crew Dog!

I bought this back in September of 2021. However, I did not use it for several months after initially purchasing it. When I finally plugged it up and used it on a flight to Alabama, it was pretty obviously clear that the AHRS was malfunctioning. I calibrated this, or attempted to at least, several times through ForeFlight and through the web address on the browser. I attempted calibration both during flight but more so on the ground on a stable, steady surface such as my table. Every time I calibrated it, it zeroed out for just a few seconds and then resumed climbing, descending and banking all over the place in an erratic manner. I reached out to Crew Dog and inquired about an exchange, but because by the time I discovered this malfunction, the rather short warranty had already lapsed and Crew Dog flat out refused to help me. I understand that the warranty was expired and that I technically was not entitled to anything, however I made it pretty clear to them that based on the timeline of things that this unit had arrived defective. So, nonetheless I still feel like this was not the greatest customer service. They recommended that I buy a new AHRS chip from their Amazon page and fix it myself. Well, they don’t have any chips listed for sale on their page. They offered me no other alternatives. I am therefore now stuck with this defective unit and the only saving grace is that I get traffic and weather. All things said, I say just spend the extra money and buy a Stratus. The older reviews on here will have you believe that the quality and price make it a steal as compared to the Stratus, and it may have once been but this is no longer the case. Buyers beware. PS. The suction cups are absolutely terrible. Only after two or three uses, they will now not stick to the window of the plane without me having to moisten them with water. This is a minor inconvenience and is annoying at worst. However it is yet another testament to the poor quality of this product.

The image shows everything that came in the box. The Stratux itself. A suction cup mount with six total cups, two extra after mounting the four to the mount. Two antennas, one for each frequency. A power cable with button to make turning the Stratux off easier. A 10Ah battery. (Actual capacity measured to 9.3Ah) A strap to strap the battery to the Stratux. A micro SD card reader to reflash the micro SD card that is already in the Stratux. The Stratux came with the latest firmware and worked without issue right out of the box. Make sure to put your phone or tablet in airplane mode then turn on WiFi and connect to the stratux wifi to configure the device as well as change settings. The battery is different than the one shown in the image. The one in the listing uses a 6Ah battery with a built in cord. The one supplied is a 10Ah without a built in cord. To replace the built in cord, they have included a cord that has a power button. This new battery holds about 9.3Ah as seen in the image bottom left. This new battery has USB C to charge however it does not seem to have a USB C controller as it charges at 5V 2A just like the USB B Micro does. Further, this battery cannot charge a USB C device via the USB C port. Only the two USB A ports offer charge. Considering the use case for this battery of powering the Stratux, it is good enough for the job. While I doubt it is required, it is possible to gracefully shutdown the stratux using the UI by connecting to the webui of the device itself. It is a small computer after all and shutting it down gracefully when possible couldn't hurt.

Based on reviews I bought the Stratux. Within minutes of powering it up, it was connected to my free Avare aviation app and showing me traffic in my local area, from inside my office. Since I have a fabric Kitfox, I placed the Stratux on the floor of the baggage area and again the device worked great with the Avare app. I plan on installing a power outlet in the baggage compartment so I can plug in the unit while I am flying. But so far the battery has given me more than sufficient time in the air to operate the device. I am pretty happy with the ease of setup and use so far, and the Avare/Stratux combo is excellent. There are also several Avare/Stratux videos on youtube if your still not sure about this device. Update 1-30-19 - Been using the Stratux for about 1 month and it has worked flawlessly. I turn it on and set it on the baggage compartment floor and view traffic in my Avare Android application. Seeing traffic is awesome!! Now I know where to look. This is such a huge leap in pilot safety, I am surprised that the FAA does not require ADS-B in. Followup August 10, 2019 - CrewDog provides excellent customer service and stands behind their product. ADS-B in is so important to me that I purchased a backup receiver.
