I got this in hopes of more efficiency and safety. You do have to get pretty close to the shell, otherwise the husk prevents you from popping it open. But I like that when you are close enough and able to tap the shell open, we have a lot less water spillage then when hacking it with a machete. The edge has stayed sharp so far through numerous coconuts, there has been no issues with the white mallet at all, it is well made with no strong smell, and you do have to be able to put a litle muscle into tapping through a layer of husk and shell. I swear I was supposed to also receive a small anti-slip mat but didn't receive it. We like this item.
