Great shoe
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5 – Perfect Trail Companion! The ALTRA Men’s Lone Peak 9 Trail Running Shoe is hands down one of the best trail shoes I’ve ever worn. From the moment I laced them up, I could tell these were built for serious comfort and performance. The wide toe box allows my feet to spread naturally, which makes a huge difference on long runs and hikes. The zero-drop platform feels balanced and promotes a more natural stride, especially on uneven terrain. The grip on these shoes is phenomenal — whether I’m running through muddy trails, loose gravel, or rocky inclines, the MaxTrac outsole keeps me stable and confident. The updated midsole cushioning strikes a perfect balance between softness and responsiveness, absorbing impact without feeling spongy. They’re also lightweight and breathable, which keeps my feet cool even on long summer runs. After several weeks of use, they’ve held up incredibly well — no signs of wear or breakdown, which speaks to the solid build quality. Overall, the Lone Peak 9 continues ALTRA’s tradition of durable, comfortable, and trail-ready shoes. If you’re a trail runner, hiker, or just someone who loves being outdoors, this shoe is a fantastic investment. ✅ Pros: Comfort, grip, wide toe box, durability, balanced cushioning ⚠️ Cons: Runs slightly large — consider half a size down Highly recommend for anyone who values comfort and stability on the trail!

Really great trail shoe!
LOVE these shoes. I tried on a pair in Chamonix and fell in love with the flat midsole and wide toe box. Very comfortable. So far the lack of "megagrip" on the outsole of the lone peak 9 doesnt seem to be an issue. So far they seem to grip really well on wet concrete at least. I will put these through the paces but so far extremely impressed with the style, colors, comfort and performance.

Best shoes I've ever owned
Was looking for a zero drop shoe with extra grip to be a daily walker and hiker. These fit the bill perfectly. They seem extremely well made and have held up well to abuse after 6 months. Chances are I'll still be wearing these 10 years from now. They do squeak on tile floors when wet, but that's the price of the tread pattern.

The boss of wide feet.
My mom taught me one thing. Ok, maybe more than one thing. You can’t fight city hall. If you have wide feet… you have wide feet. Accept it. I need safe and comfortable state park trail walking/hiking shoes. Sandals ain’t cuttin it anymore with my fatigue and limping. Need my new Foxelli hiking sticks (see my Amazon review) and need actual trail shoes. I’ve been hospitalized three times this year, the last time for sepsis. All that after a shattered femur that has never healed quite right. I’m not steady on my feet. So, after driving Amazon nuts (so sorry you guys) with seven “let me try them please, gee thank you” pairs of shoes (yes-you heard that-7) and driving my wife nuts with probably 20 hours of web research and amazon reviews and youtube video reviews and time returning shoes at the UPS service counter at our local store… And most importantly, trying to find shoes that looked cool… I found only *two* of the seven that made the final cut to leave the carpeted hallways and take to the trails. And the one I most wanted to love… cuz they look more cool… the Brooks Ghost Trail… hurt my feet on the trail. Last week, after walking eight-tenths of a mile on an easy trail in the Ghost Trail shoes, I injured the tendons in my bad hip, and my feet were yelling at me. I had to stay off my feet for three days. So… enter the shoes that were in second-place… the Altra Lone Peak 9. I took them out this afternoon on the most rugged, steep, muddy, and filled with roots trail I could find in Minnesota’s Myre Big Island State Park. Same distance: eight-tenths of a mile. And the Altras won. You can’t fight city hall. My feet felt so good afterwards that I didn’t want to take them off when I got home. The Ghost Trail did not feel that way. Listen up if you have troubled feet: I have weird wide feet. Not 4Es. Not 2Es. But in between. So more than wide, but not extra-wide. And painful toes. Mostly my second-toes. Either tendinitis or arthritis or who-knows-what. Not hammer toe, claw toe, or mallet toe. Basically… they just hurt all the time. Finally, the balls of my feet get easily sore and tired. Thankfully, no plantar fasciitis. Not really, except yes, cuz the outer side of my arch gets sore if I’m not careful. Both feet. So ALL shoes lose for me. All. I only “win” when I find shoes I don’t hate. (Side note: That’s why I literally live in my six year old ECCO Yucatan sandals. The only footwear in my life I have not hated. I leave them on inside my apartment because I forget I’m wearing them. Amazing soles for support, wide toe box, and three-straps for adjusting. Heaven. And lasted six years of daily wear for 8 months out of each year. During this trail shoe shopping mission, Amazon showed me an unreal clearance pricing on my sandals: 80 bucks a pair. (I paid 120 six years ago.) So I sized up from my 44EU to a 45 cuz my feet are aging and spreading. Got them. Perfect size *with* socks. Just a tad too big *without* socks. I wear them both ways. Sigh. So I ordered the 44s. When they got here, I started the return on the 45s. Amazon is like… hey… what if we give you 16 bucks back on your credit card and you keep them? I’m like… dudes… yeah. So now I have two pair of perfection footwear… literally identical to those I bought six years ago. Sometimes it’s just nice to catch a break. I love you Amazon!) Back to the trail shoes… cuz I really can’t/shouldn’t wear sandals on the trails… I think the Brooks Ghost Trail caused injury because it was too much cushion, and a typical 8 millimeter “drop” (from heel to ball of foot). And at the end of the day, it just wasn’t wide enough. A 2E isn’t necessarily a 2E in every brand. But it’s still a great shoe. The Altra Lone Peak 9 are “zero-drop” shoes… the cool new thing. Flat. Like my ECCO sandals I live in. My body is used to and likes “zero-drop.” And even though their wides are also considered 2E… the way Altra does their toe box… it feels more like the 3E I need. The Lone Peak 9s handled the really difficult trail with roots, mud, rocks, and wet leaves like a boss. The 3.8 mm lug depth was just right. Not too much, not too little. Because of the zero-drop I felt “connected” to the trail. I know that it may take time for you to adjust to a zero-drop shoe. It will be worth it. The connection to the trail is amazing. Forget “looking cool.” Stop worrying if your shoes may look like clown shoes. All that matters is your feet. And these may be the answer. They were for me. Try them. (PS: First, they run true to size. I’m a just-a-bit longer than a 10 1/2 on my right foot, and they are the perfect length at that size. Don’t upsize. Second, don’t choose the Maroon color. I did at first. Returned them immediately. More like an unpleasant purple.)

Extremely comfortable and versatile trail shoes
Everyone’s feet are different, but for me, the ALTRA Lone Peak 9's have been one of my favorite purchases ever for hiking and backpacking. The fit and shape feel very natural and comfortable. On my first outing, I hiked 60 miles with no break-in and didn’t get a single blister. I’m now well over 100 miles on them, and the wear has been minimal. They aren’t waterproof, but I actually prefer the breathability, they dry quickly and keep my feet cooler and less sweaty. The tread and grip are excellent, performing well across a variety of terrains. The all-black color is clean and understated, which I really appreciate compared to the loud colors of many trail runners. I even wear them for walking 18 holes of golf quite often. While I still wear my golf shoes when using a cart, it’s hard to go back to them after experiencing the wide, comfortable toe box of these shoes. Overall, I think they’re a versatile, comfortable, and high-performing shoe for hiking, backpacking, and everyday wear.

Comfortable, but pricey shoe.
I’ll start by saying that anyone who reads shoe reviews should take them with a grain of salt. Everybodys feet are different, and no two people will ever have the same experience with a particular shoe. I have “wider” feet. And by that, I mean that I can generally fit into a regular shoe with some slight discomfort, and they will usually stretch out to the point where they are ok to wear and don’t bother me. I prefer to get “wide” shoes when they are available. They just feel way more comfortable. With these, I got a size 12 Wide. They felt very comfortable right out of the box. I ended up doing a 12 mile hike in the White Mountains of NH the day after they were delivered on wet, gravely, steep terrain. Almost no break in period. I wore them around the house and ran to the super market the day I received them. No blisters. No discomfort. Very well made, stylish and durable shoe. The traction of the soles is decent, but not superb. The heels definitely don’t have a lot of traction of descents, and in general the sole doesn’t have great traction on wet rocks. It had rained heavily the previous night in the area I hiked, so everything was very wet. Overall, I think it’s a great shoe. A little pricey in my opinion. I don’t imagine they will outlast my Merrells as far as durability, but they’re a decent shoe to have in my collection. As a side note, if you’re looking to order the Maroon color, just know that they are almost more like a weird shade of dark purple. Not at all what I was expecting. I would have ordered black if I had know that. Included are before and after 1 hike pictures.

Best shoe for larger wide foot
I have struggled finding shoes that fit my size 14 wide foot. Most shoes are not shaped like an actual foot and these nailed it!!! Zero drop, 14 wide with a wide toe box. Very impressed. Will 100% order more.
