how long does this stay fresh stored? does it have an expiration date?

Protected from air and bugs, very very long time. I buy "food grade" because i eat it and I know chemical grade may contain trace toxic elements or spores while much purer than good grade. Joe W. PhD

Do I add this to salt for curing meat?

Yes, but this is only for long cured meats like country ham. i made the mistake of purchasing this to cure a regular ham because it didn't have red food coloring, only to find out there is a difference between sodium nitrite and nitrate, and what I needed was nitrite.
