I live in an apartment that supplies free air filters each month. With that privilege, they provide the worst possible air filters you can imagine that provide no type of protection, whether that's a HEPA filter, virus protection, dander, etc., whatever you are looking for, apartments will give you the most affordable filters for their budget and don't care about human protection and safety. So, I like to purchase my own filters but they are super pricey going this route. Quality vs. Quantity. My apartment filter is measured at 20x20x1 which is what I ordered on Amazon (the Merv 11). It absolutely does not fit my air conditioner. Now, when I purchased a 20x20x1, same brand, at Walmart, it did fit - but online I somehow got a different size. It was too tall/large for my unit and I had to cut the top portion off just so I could get my monies worth. I will say that it does a great job at collecting dust; even found a moth sucked into the unit the other day; but I don't think it really helps as far as smells go. I have a partner that smokes cigs and does not understand what air pressure means when he tries to stand at the back door and blow the smoke outside, opposed to his full body being outside and the door is closed. Due to the air pressure, the smoke just comes right back inside. I do have 3 name-brand purifiers around my house doing most of the legwork, but they can only do so much. The filter doesn't filter smoke. It also states it's a 3-month filter - I don't know how to calculate that. I think it maybe can hold "gunk" up to two months depending on your home, the amount of dust and pet dander you have, and other factors that play into it - but from a mental standpoint, I would not be able to leave a filter full of pet dander and dust in my unit for 3 months. My apartment collects a ton of dust and pet dander so 2 months max. I will say it is pretty good quality material compared to my standard apartment's filter where you can see through it and there's no visible protection. This filter actually has a thick layer of protection - so for the brand, and honestly being able to get more than one month's use out of it, I will absolutely return, but we need to get our measurements figured out.
