It was probably a Rubbermaid or similar and was well over 25 years old. I suspected the lid was not sealing well for a long time. We got this thing and the lettuce was so crisp, we realized we should have thrown out the old one at least 10 years ago.Those that complain of it being too large are right. It claims a large amount of real estate in the fridge. We couldn't use it right away because right after Christmas the fridge was too full of ham, turkey and other leftovers. But with our old keeper, the lid would not fit on with most heads until we used some of it. This one holds the whole head.I also agree with those that say it feels flimsy. When you snap on the lid, it feels cheap. So I don't think it will probably last 25 years, but it really works.We are only on our 2nd head of lettuce. On the first head we used the pointed "stand" we saved from the old keeper that you stick the head on and set it in the bottom of the keeper. The head was so crisp and did not brown on the bottom for weeks. This time we did not use the stand and I notice a lot more browning on the bottom. It could just be the head. I'll have to test multiple times to know if we need to keep using the old stand or not. First impression was that it was a little underwhelming constructed (a bit cheap), but in the end it really does what it promises and at the price you cannot go wrong. It is, of course, too large to fit in your crisper drawer so it does take up some room. I keep a sheet of paper towel in with the lettuce to absorb the excess moisture and change it occasionally when I eat lettuce. When I opened the package I thought that it was much too cheaply made to be effective. However, because of the low cost I knew that I would net very little after paying return shipping, so I decided to give it a try. I removed the core from a head of lettuce,rinsed it and let it drain for a few minutes, then put it core-side down in the crisper. I used lettuce from it three or four times a week for two weeks (since I generally only cook for myself). Now I'm going on the third week and what's left of the lettuce is still extremely crisp, with only slight rusting on the very bottom edges of the leaves. Easily works as well as the Tupperware crisper I had a few years, and which cost almost four times as much.
