Arabic vs. Arabic: A Dialect Sampler

This is a great book to have if you want to learn a specific dialect. Of course it's not an end-all-be-all. But it certaintly primes you. The free audio on the website is what makes this book highly valuable for learning Arabic. Plenty of vocab and even grammar. The only thing I will say is that for those wanting to learn the Iraqi dialect, it is kind of hard to hear the guy's voice. Other than that great book.

Learning Arabic can be a huge undertaking, and this book really streamlines the process. It makes a clear distinction between the different dialects, and clearly compares and contrasts different verbs, nouns, adjectives, across the many dialects. It even comes with audio recordings so that you can hear the clear difference in pronunciation between the dialects. I can't recommend this book enough!

Innnnnncredible resource. Every single time I consult it and have a question, the author has already answered almost in a prescient manner below each chart with a footnote. Genius.It's not a huge dictionary of words, obviously. It's just to give you an idea of the various regional and country-specific dialects, similarities and differences.Good for seasoned MSA students as well as beginner's who are just getting started.

It is very difficult to find good books on Arabic. This author was a great find ... you will never find a more complete comparison of Arabic dialects than this collection. Matthew Aldrich is a genius in every language that he outlines. He really gives you what you need to learn a language. He is meticulous and a master of language. Buy every book he creates if you really want to learn.

A "must have" for the serious student of Arabic, especially if you plan to visit the Middle East and wish to communicate effectively, as some people aren't one hundred percent fluent in the MSA that most Americans study. It helps to avoid misunderstandings!

I definitely want to have this on my shelf, but you need to be aware that it is very much a book only useful if you are interested in the intricacies of comparing say Syrian and Palestinian Arabic. I like it because I watch a lot of Arab TV now and am a language nerd.

A good starting point to begin with dialects, I recently visited Morocco and delighted locals using genuine dariya words.Thank you.

For the price I would love more content. It seems long because it has 14 dialects per word but there would be so so many useful verbs in here that just aren't there. Like maybe pick which are the top 100 (or even 50) most used verbs in English and then find functional Arabic equivalents to add in here, for example "to give" haveيعطي او يدز إلخLike sorry I didn't really need the numbers from 1 to 25 spelled out considering the extremely low contrast between dialects. I needed more useful verbs. And also a grammar section.This book seems more like a compilation of survey results of very small sample sizes of native speakers rather than an even moderately detailed comparison. I love Arabic a ton but was disappointed:/ could be a good coffee table book for the Arabic classroom or academic office but that's about it.
