AVID Jazz here presents three classic Jimmy Giuffre albums plus, including original LP liner notes on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD. For our second foray into the musical world of Jimmy Giuffre we have selected three great albums '7 Pieces', 'Ad Lib', 'In Person' and three tracks from 'The Four Brothers Sound' (with more to follow on a future release). Appropriately seven Giuffre compositions appear on '7 Pieces' which features Giuffre on clarinet, tenor and baritone sax, Jim Hall on guitar and Red Mitchell on drums, with legendary recording engineer Bones Howe at the controls. The Jimmy Giuffre 4 line up for 'Ad Lib' features Giuffre on clarinet and tenor sax, Jimmy Rowles on piano, Red Mitchell on bass and Lawrence Marable on drums. Here Jimmy Giuffre is featured on, (in his own words from the original liner notes) 'a blowing album' where he is found as an. 'unapologising and unprotected improvising soloist'. Again in Giuffre's words..'now all six tracks make complete statements of my blowing as of the date'(1959). Again further quoting about his band'I would have to search very far to come up with a more perfect rhythm section for my purposes here.or actually most any purpose'. 'In Person' features the Jimmy Giuffre Quartet with Giuffre on clarinet and tenor, Jim Hall on guitar, Buell Neidlinger on bass and Bill Osbourne on drums, recorded live at the Five Spot in New York, August 1960. The band recorded all night with tracks like 'What's New' being laid down at 3 a.m in the morning when the only applause was coming from the engineers, the audience having long departed! For the first time on record you can also experience the 'new' sound of Giuffre's clarinet blowing more 'out and more hard'. We conclude with three tracks from 'The Four Brothers Sound'. On this album Giuffre multi-tracks the sound of four tenors, accompanied by Jim Hall on guitar and Bob Brookmeyer on trombone. All three albums plus have been digitally re-mastered
