Review: Initial impressions. - The axe was packed decently and shipping was fast. The initial wood splitting took some 'adjusting' as I'm used to using a monster maul. So far I have been quite pleased in the 'surviving abuse' category. It has survived several over strikes and misses with no visible damage. The handle seems to be very durable for a synthetic material regarding over strikes. The axe itself was sharp and proved to be very easy to sharpen with a file as the misses required some touch up filing. There seems to be some law of nature that any axe hitting dirt will always find a stone of sufficient size to ding the edge. If you don't hit the ground, it seems to keep an edge quite well. The steel temper is such that I haven't chipped an edge yet but it maintains a sharp edge without being brittle, which is a good quality. That being said, the non stick coating seems to work for and against you. If you strike the wood with just enough force to split it, then it aids in friction reduction. The downside of the coating is that an insufficient strike to split the wood will result in the axe popping out of the split because of the non-stick coating. If it pops out, you don't have the option of striking the head with a sledge or picking the wood up, axe imbedded, and slamming one more time on the stump. The aiming qualities of this axe are really good and if you take your time, you will rarely miss. The diameter of the wood split for this review ranged from two inches to eight inches. Yeah, two inches was the aiming test. Overall I would give this splitting axe high marks except on wood with large and numerous knots. It is considerably lighter than the monster maul, therefore less tiring to use, but the monster is still required for those 'tough' knotty pieces as it has quite a weight advantage and even then, sometimes the chain saw comes out to deal with the really obstinate pieces. It does have a short learning curve in terms of adjusting your swing for just the right amount of strike energy. Swing too hard and you will begin to chew up the splitting stump and too soft a swing will result in the axe popping out of the wood. Considering the axe weight, and therefore the range of wood it should be used on, I gave it five stars for its performance to date. Once you learn to adjust your swing for the wood piece, it will save you exertion and ease wood splitting. If you split wood, this is a very worth while axe to own and it will cover the majority of most peoples wood splitting requirements. Large diameter still goes to the monster maul though...
Review: "Swinging" its' praises! - I don't normally like writing reviews this soon after purchase, but color me impressed! This thing actually splits wood like a hot knife through butter. Its' profile is somewhere in-between a felling axe and a splitting axe; and that's exactly what I wanted. It's also not nearly as heavy as a regular splitting axe (only 4 lbs.), but it gets the job done! I wanted that lighter weight so it could be a little more versatile than just splitting wood (even if it's really not supposed to be - don't judge!). Upon opening the box I was a little surprised to find a completely hollow handle with the end just wide open. I even did some internet research to make sure it wasn't defective! Apparently though, that's the way it is supposed to be. Despite my foregone conclusions on the handle, I decided to go out back and give it a try. After a couple of swings (and some misses), I quickly realized my skepticism was completely unfounded. Evidently Fiskars is really on to something with this design; virtually ZERO vibration. I used a wooden handled axe to cut through a large root the other day, and my hands hurt for days from the impacts/vibrations. There was none of that with this one though! I've always liked the way a solid wooden handle looked and felt, but no more. The size and weight of this axe turned out to be pretty perfect for my purposes. At 6'4" tall, I need a longer axe, and this one fits the bill. After a few hard blows that impacted the handle directly below the axe head, I can say it is holding up beautifully so far. Misses don't even leave a scratch, much less a dent or crack. Some splits are truly one swing splits as claimed, others take a bit more effort, but that's to be expected. Yes, in the picture I'm splitting logs from a dead pine tree that fell, and pine is a softer wood. It was however still extremely wet, and it split fine. I also tried it on some old/dry oak and it did great there as well (albeit a bit more effort), as oak is an extremely hard wood. And yet, no vibrations or sore hands! This axe actually made chopping wood fun again!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: On a scale of 1-10, how useful is this super splitting axe against a zombie?**
A: With Zombies sometimes recovering from FATAL BLOWS it has always been my practice to follow-up with a GOOD WOOD CHIPPER. AMAZON sells a good 7HP Heavy Duty 212cc Gas Powered 3:1 Multi-Function Pro Wood Chipper Shredder https://www.amazon.com/GreatCircleUSA-Heavy-Duty-212cc-Powered/dp/B075SG6372/ref=sr_1_4?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1538798975&sr=1-4&keywords=wood+chipper This can be very messy but is made easier by cutting section with a chainsaw. I use the STIHL MS 271 FARM BOSS 20" bar.

**Q: Brand new axe split a dozen dry logs. Corners of blade already slightly chipped. Never hit rocks or hard objects. Is this normal?**
A: I get chips dings and rolled edges regularly with mine. I need to sharpen it after about an hour or so. It performs very well, but I wish it was a bit more durable. I am splitting hard woods and I am don't go easy on it at all. I am happy that the handle has held up even when I smashed it into a log on a freezing cold day.

**Q: how to replace handle on Fiskars Axe?**
A: Fiskars products are warranted to the consumer purchaser to be free of defects in material and
workmanship for as long as the consumer owns the product. Warranty does not cover
sharpening, normal wear and tear, environmental factors, accidental damage, misuse,
industrial/commercial use.

well after a quick look at the warranty
i think you may only get a replacement if it was shipped that way
if it was wear and tear or anything like that it isnt their responsibility

**Q: Is the X27 (36" handle) too long for a short (5'2") female?**
A: I am 5'6" and I thought this X27 was too heavy and too long for me and returned it. I am a former member of the US military and found this 36 inch long axe very cumbersome and difficult to raise over my head. I bought a smaller model with a 3 pound head and a shorter handled (28 inches long.) I can only assume the small and average sized women who are saying this axe is fine are super amazons, which I am not.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Fiskars X27 Super Splitting Axe, 36" Wood Splitting Axe
*by D***K on June 7, 2026*

The Fiskars X27 Super Splitting Axe, 36" Wood Splitting Axe works well. The axe I received was sharp enough to slice thin wood pieces of a log. That is about the right sharpness for an axe. The people that say razor sharp are confusing a shaving razor for an axe. This axe is not razor sharp and it could not be with the axe edge angle. I had two types of trees taken down and in need of splitting, a large 30ft ornamental pear tree, not to be confused with a pear tree. And a large 30 ft river birch tree. If I only had the birch to split of the two trees I would have a more negative review of this axe. However the pear was a completely different story. The axe worked very good with splitting the pear. Having split both types of trees my review is more complete. The ornamental pear split very easy with this axe. On the other hand the river birch did not split at all with this axe. I tried swinging it as hard as I could, with total control of the axe, and could not get any of the birch to split. I did get the axe head to go into the log a few inches in. Looked good but it would not split. I realized after splitting the pear tree that the river birch is a difficult wood to split. I could not split the river birch with a maul either. It's a difficult wood to split all the way down to the final stand of wood connecting two pieces. I was able to split the river birch with a couple wedges but I had to drive them all the way thru and use a hand axe to cut thru the strands. It was a process of hitting the wedge then using the hand axe to split stands them back to the wedge. It was a slow process but worked. River birch does not split well, at least not the type of river birch I had. In summary this axe feels light to swing and easy to hit accurately. It does not require any crazy swings to split normal wood. It's very enjoyable to use and does not wear you out. The weight feels right, the handle has a great grip, and the swing feels good. I really like this axe and prefer it over other axes I have. After all the splitting I did and many hours trying to split river birch the axe still had a sharp edge. I did not need to sharpen it at all. This is a great axe to split wood with.
