Silent operation
This convertor arrived today. I have moved from overseas back to the US (115V) and I have a tube headphone amplifier that was purchased in a country with 220V. I considered having the transformer changed but that was expensive and time consuming. I thought I would try this approach and I am very glad I did. This convertor works perfectly and is totally silent in operation. I could not have asked for a better more affordable solution to the problem. Highly recommended.

It works and it has low inrush.
This transformer worked with my 120 VAC inverter generator to start and run my 1 HP 230 VAC well pump. I am pleased with how it all worked. The transformer ran cool with about a 55% of running watts load.

Updated version fixed past connection issues.
I read the reviews about some of the electrical connections being not so good & caused melted wires and such. I'm happy to report all connections are soldered and or very strong crimps. Nothing was loose. They must have been improving their techniques based on the reviews here. Nothing got hot during my 20 minute long test pushing 3,000 Watts at 240v into it and 120v out of their 5000 watt model. The transformer reached 102° f and one of the connections on the push button breakers reached 110° f. I can almost handle my hot tub that hot so this is no problem at all for electronics. In the stock case it only gives you access to one leg of the 120 volt output. That's a shame because it means you can't balance the loads so you're literally transforming all of the Power you're pushing through it instead of only the imbalance between the legs on its output. It doesn't matter to me because I was harvesting the transformer for an off-grid project. After the test I removed the large toroidal center tap transformer and used it with a MPP hybrid inverter from China that only puts out 240 on line 1 and neutral on the other. It's working perfectly to transform that to American 120-120/240. I can feel the transformer humming and I measured its idle consumption at 5 Watts. I ordered eight of these transformers and apparently four of them got damaged in shipping and sent back. No duh! Because the four that showed up weren't packed correctly at all. The box the transformer was in was sliding around in a giant box with some popped giant bubble wrap. The transformer of one of them must have taken quite an impact because you could tell it was tweaked sideways in the case therefore loosened the bolt that holds it down to the bottom of the metal case. Not a big deal though, I just shook it & when I heard the transformer loose I opened it up and tighten the bolt easy peasy.

One of the best built ones we've seen
This voltage converter is spectacularly well-built for the price. Unlike the majority of units currently available on Amazon, it contains a massive toroidal transformer with potted core, which is then mounted to the chassis with a bolt through the potting. Another nice touch is a proper throw-to-toggle circuit breaker on the back of the unit. This is the best possible way to build a voltage converter. Toroidal transformers are more efficient than conventional stacked lamination designs, and are also completely silent. Mounting the transformer using potting and a bolt protects the windings and allows better cooling compared to the more common mounting technique of compressing it between the chassis and a metal plate. I do have to deduct a star for the power outlets and plug though: all of the power outlets on the unit are incredibly cheap; and while the unit is capable of continuous power input of 120 volts at 20 amps, it comes with a 120 volt 15 amp plug. This doesn't make sense, as the next-model-down handles 120 volts at 15 amps continuously and is smaller, lighter, and significantly less expensive.

Great for Stepping Up/Diwn the Voltage.
This is not only great to have going overseas with your 110v appliances, it's great for using those 220v appliances in the US. Ws so good, we bought a 2nd one to cover all our electrical transformer needs. Doesn't use a lot of power when is use, but suggest you leave it unplugged when not in use.

Internally wired wrong
I bought two of these and have the same problem on both. Unfortunately I didn't bother to check them until my return window had closed... On the 220 outlet, with 115v selected as the input voltage, you should get 220v/240v on a meter touching the L to N sockets. It does. From L to Ground you should get 110v/120v. It gets 220/240v. From N to Ground you should get 110v/120v. It gets 0v. I read another review by SDBob on May 16th, titled, "Use Caution" where I believe he is describing the same problem. He says the solution is to switch the white and black wires internally. Have looked internally and am not comfortable doing that without having it looked at by someone with more electrical knowledge than me but seems like that may not be the right solution on my two from what I can see. Very disappointing and I will not be buying or recommending any more of this brand. If the vendor wants to reach out and give me advice on rewiring this with some photo exchanges I would upgrade my review to 3 stars but otherwise 1 star is generous because it just plane does not work and I worry it could damage equipment that gets plugged into it.

works well and did exactly what we needed
This worked great and completely solved a huge issue when we brought a Dyson air wrap from australia to america. We live between the two countries so it’s hard to deal with the change in voltage. It has plenty of voltage for the step up from US 110 to the Australian 220 required to get the air wrap and hair dryer to work. It weighs about 10 pounds and it just sits on a shelf in my wardrobe and it is essentially an extension of the outlet. It’s great and saved me having to buy another $700+ Dyson for when we’re in America.

Good Transformer
Bought this transformer to bring to the UK for my 3yr tour to power our 75 inch TV and DVD player. It's on daily and runs quiet and it's always cool not warm or hot at all. Make sure you buy one that is well rated above what you need so it runs cool. Had one of these the last time we were stationed overseas and had no problems that time as well. Good buy for the price and reliable.
