Q: I am testing in a plastic bucket, unit turns on while both probes are touching water but turns off when I lift one out of water and unit is beeping

I had spoken with the seller shortly after I had purchased the controller. In order for the unit to work correctly, there has to be a ground path connection between the sump and the ground of your home electrical wiring. Your test didn't simulate your sump pit. As the seller says, just add a ground wire to the water in the plastic bucket. The other end of the wire has to be attached to your house electrical ground.

Q: Has anyone used the installation instructions if water softener discharges into sump pump pit? Instructions don't make much sense if you did.

I used mine on a sewer sump that only had a 2" gap between the on and off. So mechanical float switches didn't work well for me since there is no way to fine tune the on and off levels. HC6000 works very reliably and you can use a zip tie to secure the probes exactly where you need it.I tried the single sensor controller too. The pump would stop once it starts sucking a bit of air, then all the waste in the pipes would go back to the tank raising the level just enough for the pump to go off again.

Q: Has anyone had this for any length of time and has it held up without cleaning? Know of any better choices?

Our switches have been tested by a major pump manufacturer, where they installed 30 of our switches on a variety of pumps at their research facility, and ran all of them for 300K cycles without a single failure. Testing had to be discontinued at that time because they had other projects that required the test stands, but they did keep a few switches running and those reached a million cycles before starting to fail. Also, if the sensors are mounted in the manner we recommend for pits that have mineral content, or receive the discharge from a water softener, they will never require cleaning.

I would try to space the sensors further apart so that the pump cycles less frequently. Pumps can wear out if they are cycled too frequently. The company told me that they monitor the current, so that when it is close to zero (we are talking about ac), they will switch the relay to open thus trying odd the pump.
