Bob Hope stars in this laugh-packed wild west spoof co-starring Jane Russell as a sexy Calamity Jane. Hope is a meek frontier dentist 'Painless' Peter Potter, who finds himself gun-slinging alongside the fearless Calamity as she fights off outlaws and Indians. This 1948 comedy classic, with a zany screenplay by Edmund Hartmann and Frank Tashlin, was Hope's first colour film, and went on to become his biggest box office success, winning an Academy Award for Best Song with 'Buttons and Bows'. So get ready to hitch up your funny bone, because wherever Hope roams, hilarity is sure to follow! Excellent, lovable film which I had never seen until ...
Excellent, lovable film which I had never seen until recently on TCM. Hope is hilarious as always as well as being understated in a great acting way. He plays a dentist called Painless Peter Potter who has to get out of town on the hurry up after he pulls the wrong tooth of a customer. Enter Jayne Russell who needs a convenient way out of an equally awkward situation and they set off for the hills, not before getting married of course. Hope is hilariously out of his depth as a cowboy, providing many laughs with his movements as well as getting some of the advice given to him before a shootout wrong as usual. Arguably Bob Hope's finest film, he also sings the film's signature song buttons and bows, which is a great highlight. This is a must see.

Still very, very funny
I could only remember this film from seeing it on TV, generally on a wet Suday afternoon, so when I saw it for sale I wondered if I should just remember thinking it was funny rather than watching it again and being disappointed. I need not have feared. Of course there's none of today's special effects, and some of the scenery can look a little unbelievable, but when I watched it again with my thirteen-year-olds I found it every bit as funny as I had remembered and - wonderfully - my twins found it funny, too.

Hope at his most hapless, Russell at her most voluptuous - who could ask for more?
Not the best script ever, but a giggle throughout. Hope made a career out of doing things badly, including acting at times, but he has an engaging willingness to make a fool of himself for our entertainment - and that's what the film is, pure entertainment - with enough double entendres and prat falls for any veteran of the '50's light comedy genre. I've seen it dozens of times, but I can drag it out once a yeara nd watch it again quite happily. :)

Splendidly Funny comedy Western.
Splendidly funny film! Bob Hope at his best, playing a thoroughly inept - and distinctly cowardly! - dentist in the Wild West. Jane Russell gives good support as his "romantic interest" who sorts him out! Highlight for me is Hope singing "Buttons 'n' Bows" whilst trundling along in a covered wagon. A great comedy Western, forerunner to "Son of Paleface", made a few years later.

The Paleface Edizione Regno Unito

Great fun for family.
Bob Hope plays Painless Peter Potter, dentist, Jane Russell plays Calamity Jane who facing a prison term decides to go under cover to track those selling guns to Indians in return for a pardon. She is supposed to marry but finds out her partner has been killed. She escapes with Hope to find shelter in wagon train. Hope sings Buttons & Bows which won an Academy Award for best song. Great fun as the couple escape bad guys and Indians. 7 extra features. Excellent family fun for all. Classic Hope.
