Sumiko Amethyst Phono Cartridge

Hig,low frequency's are beautiful sounding especially bass responds!

I’ve been running a Sumiko Moonstone for the last year on my Pro-ject Debut Pro, and although I enjoyed the smooth signature, it seemed to lack the preciseness and of my Ortofon 2M blue. I put my blue back on, and remembered why I switched it out - too bright and fatiguing, especially at higher volume (yes, it was mounted correctly with the proper VTA, SRA,Azimuth, etc). I tried upgrading to the Wellfleet, but the mildly perceptible improvement was not worth the price. I then sprung for an Amethyst (a $300 jump over the Moonstone!), deciding that if it was not a major improvement over the Moonstone, I’d start looking at other lines or just live with the Moonstone for now. I mounted, measured, etc., and the sound was so muffled and the sound stage so narrow I almost went straight to Amazon to hit the return button. Then I remembered how awful the Moonstone was right out of the box. After about 3 hours of playing time, it was like someone had sneaked into my house and switched cartridges. After several more hours, I can say that the Amethyst is far superior than the Moonstone. Not unexpected given the price disparity. Detailed without being harsh, and has the “punch” the Moonstone lacked. $600 clams, but all cartridge prices are ridiculously high given they are consumables. Unless something changes over the next 30 days, I’m inclined to keep it. Anyone interested in a used and well cared for Moonstone for $150? 🤔. Running through Pro-ject S2 phono amp, Marantz NR1710, Parasound 2125 on fronts, Monitor Audio Silver 100’s (6g).

Superb cartridge in every respect. Much better than my Ortofon and Audio Technica cartridges.

Installed on a Pro-Ject X1, sounds very dynamic and warm not to shrill or muddy. I would say the sound stage is direct. Bass is not too lose but not the tightest could be my amp though. Overall sounds awesome. Clean...

Sumiko Amethyst Personal Evaluation - Setup: The most critical thing you need to know about the Amethyst is its VTA. You have to set your tone arm down to 20 degrees, or you are going to be extremely confused as to why the sound is so full of bass. Sound Characteristics: 1. Excellent noise floor. Irritation of scraping minimized. 2. Outstanding sound stage. Instruments and musicians and vocalists claim their places and hold them. Flourishes and "gilding the lilly" effects inserted by sound engineers obvious. 3. Resonating minimized. The cartridge is merciless in suppressing resonanation. This is a big problem in other carts. 4. Liveliness. There is no improvisation or added response to dramatic changes in material. It only provides what's on the vinyl, and all of what is there. 5. Truthfulness. This cartridge is about discipline. The noise is controlled, the stage is presented and the material is from the record and no place else. Conclusions: The Sumiko Amethyst is a one-of-a-kind in the moving magnet world. But must I say moving magnet? Because it really does not matter how they built it, if all you are thinking about is the sound. To put is plainly, we are in another realm with this one. You can tell the designers truly understand sound, and they know what you are looking for with great acuity. Mounted to my J A Michell Turntable

The frequency response of the Amethyst is quite good, with a generally balanced tone across the whole audio band. Unfortunately, the stylus tracks poorly even with careful, proper setup. There truly seems to be nowhere on all three axes—alignment, azimuth, and rake angle—that the Amethyst will track even moderately sibilant passages. The very same records that my cartridges from a competing Japanese corporation will track without issue all push the Amethyst into a burst of mistracking distortion on those passages. The Amethyst is from the same series as the cartridge included with my table, and it ought to be a good match for the tonearm. It just tracks poorly. There may be some QA problems with the Oyster series MMs, too. The first Amethyst I received had its diamond quite badly crooked on the cantilever, and after struggling for a few days to align the cartridge on my tonearm, I sent it back for a replacement. The replacement had its diamond properly glued, but there was no improvement in the sibilance, again after a few days of trying to find a good alignment for it. I eventually gave up and replaced the Amethyst with a less expensive one from a competing Japanese corporation and I've had not a single problem since.

After , being pretty impressed by the $150 Sumiko Rainier, I decided to roll the dice and try the Amethyst. It is what I was hoping for, a detailed moving magnet cartridge that doesn't ever get screechy, or etched. It also has great body , very well fleshed out in the mids and bass. Also tracks like a champ. Highly recommended.

Premessa: non sono un audiofilo ma un amante della musica. La Sumiko Amethyst non suona solo musica, la dipinge e come un grande pittore riesce a creare quadri dai mille e mille colori che vanno dal nero più profondo e buio al bianco puro e cristallino passando tra miliardi di sfumature colorate, dall'azzurro più riposante al giallo più caldo o al vivace arancione o ancora al rosso vivido e impetuoso per finire con un sussiegoso viola ma tutte tese a creare il miglior quadro possibile perchè le nostre orecchie possano "vedere" l'insieme di quello che i nostro occhi possono "sentire"! La sensazione che ho provato al primo ascolto è stata di sconvolgimento: mai avevo ascoltato i miei LP con una tale intensità di emozioni sensoriali che, coinvolgendo la fantasia, aiutavano a creare quella sensazione visiva della musica riversata in un dipinto stupendo. Ogni strumento viene percepito al suo posto e con la dovuta intensità del momento per poi creare quell'insieme orchestrale con la dovuta prospettiva e profondità. Incredibile! La divisione dei canali è altrettanto eccezionale. Se uno strumento è collocato a destra nulla, neppura una frangia si ascolta a sinistra. E tutto questo si ripercuote sul quadro d'insieme che si viene mano a mano a creare. E che dire della voce, la cornice perfetta di questo quadro che, cristallina, non sovrasta la musica ma la sorregge esponendosi in modo chiaro e prepotente nostrando così un quadro perfetto e godibile nel suo insieme. Sto riascoltando i miei Pink Floyd (originali d'epoca) con un nuovo piacere e con la sensazione di essermi perso qualcosa negli ascolti passati. Ma la stessa sensazione la provo con Tchaykovsky o Beethoven che acquistano nuovi colori ed emozioni. Sino ad oggi ho suonato i miei LP con un'ottima testina, la Nagaoka MP 200, che continuerò a tenere e, occasionalmente, a far suonare ma il riferimento adesso è, assolutamente, la Sumiko Amethyst! Un giornaalista, recensore di riviste audio, giornalista d'oltreoceano ha scritto, dopo asver recensito l'Amethyst, se valesset la pena acquistare una MC (dicui non faccio il nome) del valore di oltre 4500 $ rispetto all'acquisto dell'Amethyst. Naturalmente non dava la risposta ma solo il fatto di essersi posto il quesito la dice lunga sul valore di questa Sumiko. Tutto il mio entusiasmo è, ovviamente, soggettivo ma, credetemi, dopo aver ascoltato il suono che dipinge l'Amethyst non vorrete più separarvene. E sono pronto a scommetterci almeno un caffè. L'unica cosa che non mi è piaciuta è la confezione con la quale viene consegnata la testina: è una confezione senza alcun sigillo a garanzia dell'integrità del prodotto. Ho interpellato il vendito che, gentilissimo e professionale, ha risposta al mio quesito scrivendomi che il distributore italiano consegna le confezioni così come arrivano dal Giappone. Beh oggi anche un cavetto dal valore di pochi euri viene consegnato sigillato mentre una testina dal valore di centinaia di euri ne è sprovvista! Tra l'altro il venditore (Officina del suono) ha cercato di supplire a questa mancanza inviando la spedizione imballata con estrema cura e attenzione. In conclusione spero di aver fatto percepire il mio entusiasmo per questa Sumiko Amethyst che sicuramente non costa poco ma che, indubitamente per me, vale tantissimo per le emozioni che mi sta restituendo e perr la riscoperta di un modo diverso di "vedere" la musica.
