New Practical Chinese Reader, Vol. 2 (2nd Ed.): Textbook (with MP3 CD or QR Scan) (English and Chinese Edition)

Back in the day while attending college, I thought it was pretty cool how all those strange character just started to make sense after a while.

I was already done with the HSK 3 book and my tutor recommended this book. What a huge step up from the HSK books. There is no pinyin in the reading. My textbook came with a CD but I never used them. I would do the reading and then look up the words I didn’t know. Then read it again. I have a Chinese tutor whom I use to read aloud to. She would make pronunciation corrections. I went through all the readings and later did the exercises in each lesson. I haven’t used the workbook because there was plenty of exercises in each lesson. I work full time and have a self study program. This book took me six months to complete. I already bought level 3 textbook and this time the workbook too. I highly recommend.

I’ve been using this textbook (for self-study) only a few weeks, but I’m very pleased with it. It is rigorous and also interesting. It teaches Chinese mainly through dialogues. There are two dialogues plus a reading section in each chapter. There are also numerous exercises. Many of these are challenging. They force you to think hard, so that you truly end up learning. The dialogues, the reading section and more are on the accompanying CD, so you can hear them and not just read them. I also bought the workbook, which is equally good.

I used previous editions of Practical Chinese Reader - the really old series printed on cheap paper with orange and blue covers (green with light green bamboo in the 80s) - but this one is greatly improved, with high quality paper, two color printing, and up-to-date language and situations. I do miss Palanka and Ali from the old series though. It is a good for self-study because it is not teacher dependent - vocabulary and grammar are clearly explained in each chapter and, at the lower levels, characters are given with tone markings above them, making it a excellent tool for practice reading etc.

Good book for learning Mandarin at the mid-level. Really need a teacher (laoshi) to help you learn from the book however. Difficult to learn on your own with the book alone.

to learn to Chinese this book will do you. Has some dusty phrases though. For some reason it is obsessed with Beijing Opera. Aint no one like that stuff anymore. But it's good for the basics.

Good book for studying Chinese, very good texts and well structured. Does use the simplified Chinese (Hanzi) characters

J'ai fait l'achat de ce manuel afin de pouvoir suivre mes cours de chinois à la fac. C'est assez difficile de ce le procurer ailleurs, les librairies déclarent malheureusement que le livre n'est pas en stock et qu'ils peuvent le commander, mais que malheureusement, les éditions centenaires qui font la production de ce manuel répondent peu voire pas du tout. Certains étudiants qui voulaient commander ce manuel en septembre l'ont reçu pour pâque certaines années. Amazon permet d'obtenir le manuel, ainsi que le workbook associé, sans passer par les éditions centenaires quand ils l'on en stock. C'est un bon manuel qui sert de support de cours dans certaines universités, avec pas mal d'exercices en relation avec le workbook qui a des dialogues très complet et un CD pour aider à l'apprentissage des caractères et l'intonation dans les dialogues. Cependant les enregistrements fait pas l'université de langue de Pékin datent peut-être un peu, cela se ressent sur les enregistrements du textbook.
