Superb camera for a fraction of the price
I bought this camera for my daughter's trip to East Africa, where I knew she would need a reliable compact camera with a great zoom, but I didn't have the budget for a new one. This was the perfect solution. It took some superb pictures in the game parks, but was quicker lighter and easier to use than bigger full SLR cameras with large lenses. My daughter was delighted with this absolute bargain!

This Canon PowerShot, is an ergonomically designed, lightweight and compact or say a mini DSLR. It is sort of a replacement camera when you don’t want to lug around with your expensive and chunky DSLR and the lenses of course. To say, am very pleased buying this camera as it was versatile in every way that I required it to be. Before buying this camera, I had a plethora of options available and had read quite a good amount of reviews regarding compact cameras as I wanted one to - Take long shots easily without using my tele lenses - Take it for events, some places don’t allow DSLRs unless you are some press professional - Well built with ease of use and access to all functional buttons - Take incredible shots and shoot full HD videos - Be compact and lightweight - And importantly, be within my budget. And this camera completed my checklist to the T. Have been using this camera for over 6 months now and being a hobbyist I can say it has done justice to the purchase. Have been to a few trips both domestic and international with this camera (Oh yes I had my DSLR on me too) so far, I found it - Lightweight, it easily goes in your hand bag, although it comes with a separate camera bag. You can carry it around your neck all day if your choice of tours is day hikes or similar. Not made for pocket carriage as it does have a lens protrusion on its body. - Generously rubberised at the right ends for handling the unit. - With almost 1000mm of range covered it makes it very versatile to haul in long shots with ease. If compared to the capability of my DSLR, I would still rate my tele lenses way higher. To make things clear, 1000mm shots require a really steady hand, so unless am using some sort of support for the lens on my compact I don’t see myself enjoying the full agility of a 42x optical lens. Nevertheless, long shots are clear and most of them incredible and yes am happy with what I click. - Videos are decent, although frankly, I haven’t been able to fully explore the HD quality it offers. - The 16mp CMOS sensor is brilliant to play with and at low image noise it make the shots even better - Good auto focus ability - Did not like it’s battery life. Had given up on me on a couple of occasions when I most wanted it to function. My bad as I did not have a spare battery set. I somehow feel cameras that are this versatile, should have powerful energy stored in already, to make life simpler. - No wi-fi or GPS functions. Well didn’t matter to me. To summarise, this camera is amazing. At the cost I bought it at, I’d say it has served me well so far and although newer technology overpowers the existing one (which has always been the case) this Canon PowerShot SX520HS will never fail to excite me whenever I use it. Lastly, thanks to Amazon for good logistics and unit packaging. Received the product as mentioned.

This is an amazing camera for beginners or non professional photographers. Easy to use, good video and picture quality, and mostly, it has 168x zoom! It is advertised as 42x zoom but on the screen, it shows 168x zoom.

I recently purchased this Canon SX-520 HS digital camera to replace an older Nikon digital camera. I had an 2 older Canon SX-510 HS digital cameras last year & got a lot of good photos with those 2 digital cameras before they crapped out. Since this is a modestly upgraded/updated digital camera over the SX-510 HS & uses the same batteries, I figured that I would give this camera a try since the older & problematic Nikon digital camera I replaced & sold with this camera had the same size 42X optical zoom lens. Good points so far is: pretty easy to use, takes pretty good outdoor photos, menu is fairly simply to navigate, takes the same batteries the prior SX-510 HS took and has a nice 42X optical zoom lens....up from 30X with the older Canon SX-510 HS camera. Megapixels also increased a bit with this newer Canon camera also. Bad areas so far: flash slow to reload after taking each photo at night or low-light situations, questionable photo quality indoors or in low-light situations. This camera uses the easy to find SD cards for photo storage and overall, this Canon camera is a decent upgrade from the prior model from Canon. It's also slightly larger and the video control on the backside was moved slightly closer to the side....reducing the chances of me making a video my mistake [a big problem I had with the SX-510 HS Canon camera]. There is no optical viewfinder on this camera....only a decent-sized rear fixed LCD screen as a viewfinder.....which is fine for me. I know many like the swiveling/tilting rear LCD monitor for taking self photos or other photos...but for my purposes, the fixed into the camera rear LCD viewfinder works just fine. If I want self photos of me, I have a larger Canon digital camera that has the rear LCD screen that flips and swivels out. This digital camera does have a variety of manual settings possible as well. This camera is my "everyday" camera for scenic outdoor and other photos. I gave this camera 5 of 5 stars already because in the few days I have played around with this digital camera, it seems to work flawlessly and quick. Video quality is pretty decent for this camera also. It won't take DSLR quality photos, but if you need a decent super zoom digital camera without the hassles of changing lens, this camera should do the job fairly well. I may do an update to my review as time rolls one.
