Syba 8 Port SATA III Non-RAID PCI-e x4 Expansion Card Supports FreeNAS and ZFS RAID - Includes Mini SAS to SATA Breack Out Cables (SI-PEX40137)

This thing works great for Proxmox. I do not know how well the "hot swap" function will work but I needed more drive and this connector was the best option. This card pairs well with the server rack case Rosewill RSV-L4412U. The only thing is that you will still need 4 more sata ports (probably from the Mobo) in order to get all the drives. Great card clean connectors.

Had a main board fail on a freenas install, ordered a new motherboard and this card, and was able to reconnect all my drives seamlessly.

The SI-PEX40137 card arrived on schedule, but when I installed it on my Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 SB710 Motherboard running OpenMediaVault, the card was recognized at boot by BIOS but none of the attached disks were visible. I sent an email to [email protected], but I needed a solution quickly and their response was too slow for my timeline. I don't know it the card had a problem with the Gigabyte motherboard, or if it had a problem with OpenMediaVault, or if the card was bad. For my own reference on potential future use of this card, I tried to follow up with Syba support to determine why the card didn't work, but I did not get a follow-up reply.

I bought this 8-port SATA expansion card for use in my Haswell based FreeNAS server. Unlike other cards I’ve tried, all eight ports work perfectly with FreeNAS. I’m getting between 90 and 100MB/sec transfers from mirrored disks, which suggests that the card is capable of saturating my gigabit ethernet connection. The cables are very long, but very thin and flexible and easy to manipulate. I couldn’t be happier with this card. I just bought a second for a backup FreeNAS unit, and it’s now listed as “unavailable.” For the sake of the FreeNAS community, I hope this is temporary.

Yes, This thing is a second generation PCI Express 2.0 card. Yes, you can plug it into a PCIe 16 card slot. Works fine. Now, the question is then, why does that make sense? Because I have no need for a graphics card on my FreeNAS 11.3 motherboard. Booted FreeNAS and the card with it's drives were recognized without a whimper. My MB? Gigabyte B250 with a 4th gen Intel I7 and 32mb of RAM. Stuff that was laying around are now chewing up electrons and providing a nice home server that has been running amazing well on 4+1 RaidZ2. I love ZFS. Marvell got knocks for its HBA cards not talking to FreeNAS. This card from Syba was worth a try. You should try it too.

Needed this to add some spinning drives to Unraid and can confirm each drive shows up and can be used without issue. Not sure on exact speed vs direct SATA but I've never noticed issues or slower speeds when accessing drives connected to this VS the onboard SATA

Easy to install, the card comes with 2 cables each able to connect to 4 SATA ports. the cables are small and wrapped, making it less of a cable maintenance issue. All 8 ports work. Very glade to have purchased the item.

I updated to the new version of ubuntu server 24, which caused an issue with my old card that was connecting my sas drives, so I got this one. Once installed my system wouldn't even boot. What weird hardware isn't compatible with LINUX? everything server related works with linux. I do not recommend.

Comme attendu, reconnu nativement par TrueNAS Lors d'opération de nettoyage (scrub ZFS), le radiateur chauffe pas mal, mais pas de souci de stabilité

Por alguna incompatibilidad, la Bios de mi ordenador no reconoce el multiplicador pcie, por lo que solo funcionaba uno de los dos puertos (4 sata). No era defecto de la tarjeta, porque en otro ordenador iba ok, pero... yo la quería montar en el primero.

Arbeitet in einem Proliant D150 G6 unter Truenas mit 8HDDs perfekt. Leider trotzdem ~30% teurer als der amerikanische Markt Technisch 1A, nichts zu breit, nichts zu dick, passt alles und Dank des inkludierten Kabels alles auf einmal gekauft.

I purchased this card for use in a new R5-2600x based Ubuntu 20.04 headless box for serving KVM virtual machines and bulk storage. I chose it because it was listed (at the time) as Linux compatible. I hooked up my 5 2TB RAID5 storage drives to this card and my server would crash and lockup on boot. I talked to Syba's tech support and they told me the card had failed so I should return it which I did. The second card did the same thing. I called tech support again and they told me they didn't support Linux so they couldn't help me. I returned the second card and purchased an LSI card and quality cables for $30 less which worked first try. Don't waste your time and money on this card. It looks good on paper but in practice is Linux Horribilus.

Some reviews state this card is slow. Some reviews state this card doesn't work correctly. Well, some reviews are wrong, or the reviewers haven't set stuff up correctly. Card has three chips on it - two Marvell SATA controllers, and a PCIe bridge chip. If you plug the card in to a 'normal' PCIe slot, the PCIe bridge chip combines the two SATA controllers and switches between them as required. This leads to slower (but still good) performance. However, if you switch on PCIe Bifurcation (sometimes called PCIe RAID) so your 4x slot is split in to two 2x slots, then the bridge chip isn't used and you can control each Marvell SATA controller seperately. I'm running this card on an Asus B550XE motherboard with a Ryzen 5 5600G APU, base OS is Proxmox, and the card (2x Marvell) are passed through to a TrueNAS SCALE VM. I get ~200MB/s reads and writes on 4 drives (2 drive per controller). In conculsion, set it up correctly and it works just fine.
