Wold they work for hot food?

It depends on what hot food you put in them. I'm sure there would be limitations. I just filled one up with hot water to test it. It is fine and though the outside is warm to the touch, it is not too hot to hold. I would avoid putting them in the microwave however. Other wise I think it would be work fine...now you've got my creative juices working and I'm thinking perhaps some kind of soup shooter!

They're pretty sturdy but depending on how many shrimp you wanna put in there you'd probably wanna use the popcorn shrimp size. They're not that big maybe 3 1/2 inches tall by 1 1/2 inch opening on top.

How much space in inches would 40 cups take?

each cup is about a square inch on the bottom and an inch and a half on the top so 1.5 x 40 = 60 inches. A 10x10 plate would be more then enough space.

Is this the best size for a french toast stick with syrup at bottom, think they'll tip over?

Good question! I used them for parfait desserts, but I don't Dr why you can't use them for French toast sticks. They're pretty sturdy, I don't think they would tip over.
