These kite string reels are of high quality and work very well! Thank you. My Dad was a Lockheed Missle Designer so when I was a kid our garage was filled with every kind of tool and project. So he designed and we made HUGE kites out of white butcher paper and 1/4" wood dowells and they must have been 5 ft. high since they were quite a bit taller than we were. We painted them with big orange dragons and lightening bolts and such. Then my Dad MADE these 'fishing reels' out of sheet aluminum and aluminum dowells, with a 2" pipe spindles with big handles all soldered together and loaded them with 50-100 lb test line. We flew these kites until they were almost into the clouds it seemed and out of sight up over the fields next to our house! When Mom called us to dinner, it took about 30 minutes to reel them in since they were so far away. Guess I should make some kites with my grandkids now, eh? And I can certainly use these kite string reels for this project as they are sturdy and well engineered! My Dad would be impressed. Thanks for reading my walk down memory lane. Robin in Seattle : )

I purchased a cheaper kite to take to the beach because I haven't flown a kite since about 1967. But I knew I wanted more line and something easy to use to fly it. I do not regret this purchase one bit!. It's twice as long (600 feet) as the string that came with the kite (300 feet), and it was thicker, sturdier string too. A little cumbersome to attach to the kite, but that's because the hardware is very sturdy. The conditions at the beach were VERY windy, and we slowly reeled out all of this string. Just don't do it too fast or your kite will fall. The kite flew very well, and we really had fun. But when it came time to reel it in, that was the big payoff with this product. Super easy to wind, and the kite reeled in simply and perfectly, in about 2-3 minutes. I thought it might crash when the line got smaller, but it didn't. Came in just like a well trained dog. We really loved this product and I would recommend to anyone who wants their kite to fly high, but doesn't want to spend an hour reeling it in at the end of the day.

I finally got around to using this with a kite on the beach. It was great. My father brought a kite as well, but didn’t feel like flying it once he saw how simple my reel was.I was able to control the speed of letting the kite out. Everyone was impressed by the distance the kite got, and I still had half the line to go if I wanted to.It was a good wind for the day, constant and directional - as you’d expect on the beach.I ended up leaving it behind for my father and other family members who were staying for a few more days. I look forward to trying it out again on a field.The only negative is if/when the line gets tangled. This comes with poor handling. But it’s not impossible to undo. Just keep it locked at the tightest it can be.

Easy to use, lots of line on the reel. I purchased this string to replace a broken reel, I’m happy with the upgrade. I also purchased a 30ft octopus with a second reel, due to the size and pull on the massive kite that one was a bit more difficult to pull in. A larger reel would have been better for the larger kite.

The kite goes UP fast and Comes Down fast with the perfect amount of good strong line for typical single line kites. For YOUNG children, remember string friction burns HURT. If used properly, there will be NO blisters or string burns. Do NOT hand the string reel to young children without locking the crank first. A strong wind can jerk the crank out of a young child's hand causing the inner string reel to spin and let out line very fast. The natural impulse is to panic and GRAB the string with the bare hand or to put pressure on the inner spinning real and get a friction burn. This is NOT a design flaw, it's just physics. Strong winds and larger kites can really pull too hard for a young child.I love this thing! Instead of taking 30 - 60 minutes to wind up 600 feet of kite string, it takes a few minutes if the wind isn't too strong.Also, string help up very well so far with a medium to large sized kite on a gusty day. Remember don't fly kites in a STORM!!!!

I bought 7 of these for a community kite day. Two adults tried out two of them, and they were so difficult to use. I returned the 5 that had been untouched. The 2 we tried were such a tangled mess I couldn’t return them. Amazon issued one shipping label for all 5 reels. I dropped the package at UPS. I only received credit for ONE reel though. Even though they received all five in the same package. I’ve had zero luck in figuring out how to contact Amazon to recover the $69.24 I was overcharged. BTW, the simple “donut reels” I replaced them with at a fraction of the price worked wonderfully!

Three stars because I don’t want to be unfair, but this was a tooth-grinding episode for me.Pros: Nice length of string. Once the kite is flying it’s easy to hold on to the spool.Cons: Awkward to unspool on a windy day. If I let go of the winder, it’s difficult to regain control. The string got hot and scary as it whistled into the atmosphere. The lock mechanism is not easy if there’s pressure from a good wind.But the real con is how completely and utterly tangled this line can get. After one day at the beach I noticed it was haphazardly wound, with lots of loose areas, so I tried rewinding. That was a mistake. Once the string has been stretched out/used a few times, it has a maddening tendency to form inch-long tightly wound loops that tangle with each other. Two and a half days of picking at it later I was left with the photo. I never got past that point and gave the whole thing away in disgust. It was an exercise in frustration! Since I was staying in a remote-ish town on the Oregon coast there was no kite string to be found, although I searched online and in my car. In retrospect I could have looked for string in a hardware store but I was so focused on “kite string” it didn’t occur to me. Luckily I had another reel, smaller, so was able to fly before my vacation ended. I won’t be using this reel again.

This is my 2nd one. The handle you reel with broke on the first. It may have been a different brand. It would be nice if they could incorporate a brake where the handhold is. When the wind is blowing good, it spins very fast with nothing to stop it but your other hand. Recommend wearing a glove.

Honestly I was amazed at how good this was.Bought it for my 6 year olds birthday and it made flying a kite for a beginner really easy and enjoyable.We was all fascinated on how far 600ft up looked.

It's a enhanced experience for kite flying, how ever it should have more caution and warnings of how to use it properly in safe way, because when the kite catch wind it will go very fast, for small kids it will catch them by surprise.
