How tall or thick an object can you put on the base and still reach focus?

With the 0.5x objective (which I believe is standard), the focal distance is about 6”. The microscope can slide up the post plus the focal mechanism provides an additional 6”. If you routinely need more, you can flip the scope 180 degrees and place the base on something to raise it (and weight the base down so it doesn’t tip over). I use my scope this way all the time and have a couple inexpensive 8 lb dumbbells weighing down the base. This turns the scope into somewhat of a boom stand scope.

Barlow lens gives very blurry image no mater how it's adjusted -- the stock objective is fine. A defect or am I doing something wrong?

The barlow lens will need a lot of working distance to focus. Please try to raise the microscope head and focusing rack and it should focus.
