how small are the gears?

About 3-4 inches around, close to an inch high. Great for kids about 4-6 maybe even a little older. No small pieces for little ones to get into. this is a great educational toy. Might need an adult to help them get the hang of it, but when they do it is magic.

Does this toy come with a storage box or container?

No, just the cardboard box the toy comes in.

How many pieces come in this set?

95 pieces. scroll over the pictures and you will see the front of the box which says how many pieces are in the box

Can anyone tell me the diameter of the hole in the middle of each gear? Wanting to use screws in the middle to create a play wall for young baby.

7/32" as far as I can accurately measure.
