Protec Classic Helmet

I just picked up cycling in NYC, and of course I need a helmet because it's NYC and people are crazy. I ordered the XL for my gigantic head after reading many of the reviews here saying to order a size up. I was actually kind of worried when it arrived because it looked kind of small, but when I tried it on, it fit like a glove. So if you have a big head, get the XL.Only thing is it has yellow straps, not black straps like on the Amazon listing. Not a big deal, I just would have preferred black straps.

I ordered this helmet not wanting those typical cyclist helmet that look goofy. This one looked to be perfect. I ordered it after reading that the sizes were skewed and so on but I followed their sizing chart and thought an xl would be more than adequate. I was wrong. It sat on the top of my head and looked goofy as all hell and the straps were uncomfortable around the ears. I was going through the process on returning the items and found out you have to pay the shipping cost and a 20% restocking fee on opened items. Last time I checked you have to be a psychic or something to look inside the box w/out opening it to see if it fits properly or not. I am not capable of such feats of impossibility so I am now charged with these fees even though they are misleading customers with their sizing charts. So the 1 start goes to their bad sizing and return policies.

I ordered this helmet, thinking it was made of the plastic shell, the styrene inner shell and the soft foam pads, like you see in the photo- but it's just the plastic shell with the soft foam pads glued right to it, no styrene part at all. It doesn't feel like it offers any protection. I don't wear it.

I got it because I thought it was like my buddy's water sport helmet. Would not suggest it for water sports, should work fine for dry sports.

Protec CPSC Classic Helmet, Matte Gray, Size LargeI liked the styling of the Protec helmets after I started seeing US Special Operations Forces use variants of them. I know many teenagers do not like wearing helmets for bicycling, skateboarding, or inline skating mainly because the helmets looked goofy, but the Protec styling really appealed to me. Had I known more about them when I was a teenager, I would have worn one each time I got on my bike.The build quality is only acceptable. The "generous fit pads" rely on adhesive Velcro patches to adhere to the EPS foam, which is about the thickness of some index cards. I was used to my Snell M2010 motorcycle full-faced racing helmet with its extremely thick EPS foam, and when I got my Protec it was about ¼ the size! Anyhow, the EPS foam is fine and is a black/dark gray color. It's the fit pads that are barely holding onto the EPS foam that concerns me. Some of the pads were not aligned with the holes, and I tried to align them only to find the entire Velcro patches coming off.The chin strap is very narrow, and I would have liked a black or darker color to go with the matte gray instead of bright yellow. The fastex connector is easy to use, but the adjustment is very stiff.The helmet is very light weight and does not get in the way. I can wear my Oakley M Frames without any interference from the straps or helmet, so the comfort level is VERY high. The only thing I really have to complain about is the sizing. I normally wear a MEDIUM motorcycle helmet, and my head circumference matches the Protec chart for a LARGE. The Large fits fine, but I can sort of rotate the Protec towards the back of my head. Unfortunately, I don't think their Medium will fit better because it would be too small. The sizing doesn't make a lot of sense for adults.Overall: 4/5 stars, needs better sizing and more generous fit pads, and more adhesive Velcro patches to remain affixed to the EPS foam. High speed low drag styling!

We always purchase Protec Helmets as they fit well, meet standards for safety, and look cool. The item described on Amazon as "Matte Charcoal" actually comes with a yellow strap. The item pictured as "Matte Charcoal" on Amazon is actually Protec's "Matte Grey" (which is not that dark shade of charcoal with the brownish/aubergine undertone pictured, but more of a light "battleship grey") - if you order "Matte Charcoal" you'll get a nice matte dark charcoal helmet with a not so nice vibrant yellow strap.

The metal rivets fail after a year in salt water use.Would not advise using any ProTec helmet in salt water. Also found there is no way to contact company.

Helmet is great but you need to order the next size up. I measured at the bottom of the sizing for a large but the helmet was very tight on my forehead when I received it. I had to order the extra large. I measured 23.25 inches around my largest part of forehead one inch above eyebrow. Large sizing is from 23.25 to 24.75. Was just uncomfortably tight.

Sehr schöner, cooler Helm. Sehr gute Passform, gute Belüftung und Justage. Versand gewohnt schnell und zuverlässig. Klasse! Mit diesem Helm auf dem Kopf fährt man nicht nur sicherer, man sieht auch lange nicht so schräg aus wie mit gewöhnlichen Bikehelmen.
