Great For Musicians
I am a musician and I use this to record jams so I can learn new tunes. The ability to slow the recording is key on playback so it is easier to pick out individual notes. The unit is not advertised as a means of recording music and the fidelity is not appropriate for general listening, but it is clear and distortion-free, so it serves my purpose well. It was recommended to me by two other musicians who both have one and I am extremely happy with its performance. A very reasonable price for a splendid unit. The fact that there are no moving parts means no ambient sound from the unit itself is recorded, which is another major plus. My only complaint is that the display is not lit, so it must be under decent light to be visible. I give it five stars, anyway.

DO NOT PURCHASE
This piece of s*** broke 4 months after I bought it. The microphone stopped working and plays back nothing but static. I am a therapist in training and need this device to record my sessions. I kept this awful device in a locked file cabinet except when taking it out to use it. This is absolutely unacceptable.

and even better, you cannot order a longer one
This device does what it says it does, and does it fairly well. HOWEVER, and this is a big however, it ships with a proprietary USB cable that is about 6 inches long. You cannot use any other USB cable because the connector on the device only accepts the proprietary one, and even better, you cannot order a longer one, and you cannot order a replacement if you happen to lose the one that comes with the recorder. Can you spell GREED, Olympus ?

Pretty good for the price
Decent, and cheap to purchase. But the VN-702, VN-802PC are a slight bit better. The only drawback on this one is that, sometimes, the audiostops on it's own, and unless you are paying attention, you can missrecording what you wanted. This does not always happen, but the othermodels I mentioned do not have this issue. That said, this issue is stillthe only complaint I have. It's a modern unit with lots of built in memory, and records well otherwise, and plays back well too. It can upload to a PCvery easily, and the user manual is easy to understand. The buttons and controls are easy and well placed. The LCD screen works great and is easy to see what you are doing.

Does live recordings! A big plus!!
This version records live, so that when recording acoustically with headphones on, the operator can actually hear the recording live, thus allowing some control over the ambience of the recording! I bought this particular recorder as the identical backup for the day that my original Olympus VN-701PC, which I've used extensively (and I might add, has worked faithfully) for a little over 10 years already, finally gives up its electronic/digital ghost. I can honestly say that this particular model from Olympus is definitely well made and very dependable!!

This recorder is excellent! Not sure I dig the sound of my voice (tehehe), but the sound quality is quite impressive! You don't have to speak loudly! Very good buy too! I'm ecstatic!

Small, handy recorder
The product is fine. The instructions very hard to follow, frustrating and I needed a magnifying glass to read them.
